The lyrics would really move you, in case you get the context of the song. And one need not know the story line to get the context. Just look at the video. The actors Rajesh Khanna and Rekha, as well as the singers Kishore and Lata make the context so clear that I need not fill in the background details. Very powerful emotions have been penned in very simple language by Gulshan Bawra. It was one of the last hits of R D Burman before the trend of chaalu songs lashed Bollywood like a thunderstorm.

Not just the storyline and the context of the song, I also feel for Rajesh Khanna. He lost his superstardom thanks to his unprofessional ways. After he realised his mistake, he turned over a new leaf and tried very hard, giving great performances in movies with nice storylines, but his efforts would repeatedly come cropper. A few of his movies were hailed by critics, and liked by discerning audience, but he had lost too much ground and all the hard work put up by him in late 1970s and early 1980s went largely in vain. But he showed glimpses of his acting talent, unlike his star appeal that was on show during his superstar days. Rekha on the other hand was enjoying the zenith of her career.

A very nice song. Kishore Kumar earned national award for this song.

This song, the theme song cum title of the movie had several versions. HFGK mentions three version. HFGK mentiones another song “Na jaane kyun dil se ye aawaaz aayee” as another song, but that too is starting part of this same song. So there are in total four versions of this song according to HFGK but in reality three versions (duet, male solo and female solo). In the movie, the song keeps getting played several times. Picturised versions of the songs may not necessarily be full versions of the songs. What is described as duet song in HFGK are picturised partially at various places in the movie. For example the initial lines of the duet version is picturised as a solo snippet in Kishore Kumar’s voice towards the end of the movie as “The End” of the movie appears on the screen.

Translation(Duet version)

I wonder why I heard this voice from inside my heart
that being separated from you takes precedence over our union
the tear drops of these eyes would not have been likened to pearls
if you were not there

I would have had no motivation to live if it was not for you

when I look at you, it appears as if spring season has arrived
your presence is like a beacon spreading its light in dark night

I do not have words to tell what you mean to me
You are the last hope of my life
I would not have had my hopes kept alive, if it was not for you

Had I not received your support,
I would be caught in a whirlpool, and would be unable to reach the shore
I could have still drowned at the shore by strong currents,
but for your helping hand

I will happily share all your sorrows
I will not complain come what may
World has laughhed at me, happiness has bypassed me
I would have had no motivation to live but for me

Definitely one of the better songs to have come out in the 1980s.

I find Lata’s voice a bit too shrill but the “hotey” word could have been better pronounced by her but overall it is a very good song.

Raja, I too find Lata too shrill. On the other hand,Kishore Kumar’s voice is divine.

This is one of very very few songs of 80s which I like. And I like to watch on the video clip for the superb performance by both the actors. Also superb rendition of high pitched song by both Kishore and Lata.

There is Lata solo version of this song with the same lyrics except the second stanza of the lyrics of Kishore-Lata duet.
