Jab koi baat bigad jaaye jab koi mushkil pad jaaye

Posted on: September 12, 2008

A superb song picturised on Vinod Khanna, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Shafi Inaamdaar, etc. ( Can someone tell me the name of the lady playing Shafi’s wife ?).

For a long time, I thought that this song was sung by Kishore Kumar. Now it turns out that it is sung by Kumar Sanu. The Kishore Kumar clone that Kumar Sanu is, he has sung this song superbly and it has got to be one of his best songs ever. Sadhana Sargam, who makes her first appearance in this blog, sounds so sweet, almost sugar like.

Picturisation is excellent. Shafi Inaamdaar’s wife , played by Gopi Desai, is unhappy and this song, sung at a party sees attempts by Shafi, helped by Vinod Khanna and Meenakshi, to assuage her hurt feelings.

It is a very nice and memorable song composed in 1990 making it a fairly new song for this blog. Indeewar comes up with nice lyrics. I was going to write something similar for the music, but then I found that this tune is inspired from the wonderful song “500 miles” ( Peter Paul & Mary version/ brothers four version), that has been sung in US for decades by many artists. Despite this tune being inspired from west, this song itself still deserves to be rated as an outstanding song.

Song- Jab koi baat bigad jaaye (Jurm) (1990) Singers- Kumar Sanu, Sadhana Sargam, lyrics- Indeewar, MD- Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics

jab koi baat bigad jaaye, jab koi mushkil pad jaaye
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamnawaaz
jaba koi baat bigad jaae, jaba koi mushkil pad jaae
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamnawaaz
naa koi hai, naa koi tha, zindagi mein tumhaare siwaa
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamnawaaz
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamnawaaz

ho chaandni jab tak raat, detaa hai har koi saath
tum magar andheron mein, naa chhodnaa meraa haath
ho chaandni jab tak raat, detaa hai har koi saath
tum magar andheron mein, naa chhodnaa meraa haath
jab koi baat bigad jaae, jab koi mushkil pad jaae
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamanawaaz
naa koi hai, naa koi tha, zindagi mein tumhaare siwaa
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamnawaaz

wafaadaari ki wo rasmen, nibhaaenge ham to kasmen
ek bhi saans zindagi ki, jab tak ho apne bas mein
wafaadaari ki wo rasmen, nibhaaenge hama to kasmein
ek bhi saans zindagi ki, jab tak ho apne bas mein
jab koi baat bigad jaae, jaba koi mushkil pad jaaye
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamnawaaz
jab koi baat bigad jaae, jab koi mushkil pad jaaye
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamanawaaz
naa koi hai, naa koi tha, zindagi mein tumhaare siwaa
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamnawaaz
tum denaa saath meraa, o, hamnawaaz

This song is one of my best songs of the last 20 years.
It has some personal memories for me – it used to be one of the favourite songs of my wife.

Kumar Sanu and Sadhana Sargam have both sung it very well. The music is soft and lilting. And though the tune is inspired by 500 miles (one of my favourite English tunes – one I remember from the age of 10), it does not take anything away from Rajesh Roshan’s composition. He has done a very good job here.

Correction :

It’s “hamnawaa” always , never hamnawaaz.

Found this explanation at Quora.com :

” Humnawai’ is a word from Urdu language but its origin is basically Persian. The word is compound of two nouns ‘hum’ and ‘nawai’ hence is a compound noun; murakkab in Urdu. ‘Hum’ means the state of being together; togetherness or same and ‘nawai’ means speech, the word as a whole means ‘same speech’ or ‘like mindedness’.

The person who has the same thinking as you have is called ‘humnawa’.

In Urdu poetry the word ‘humnawai’ is of much importance.

A piece of poetry by Naseer Tarrabi:

Wo hamsafar tha magar us se hamnawai na thi
K dhoop chaon ka alam raha judai na thi
Na apna runj na apna dukh na auron ka malal
Shab e faraq kabhi hum ne yun ganwai na thi ”

——————————————————

‘ Humnawaai ‘ – may mean same speech or language, thinking or attitude. But ‘hamnawaa’ would mean, the people coming from the same direction and going towards the same destination, and having the same purpose in life.
