Sun Champa sun Taara

“Apna Desh” was a movie that appealed to majority of movie goers. It had almost every thing that the movie going janta wanted. In those days, movie going public were undergoing a change of taste. Movies where hero sang sad songs and got bashed by the villains were proving unpopular. People wanted the heroes of 1970s to be more assertive and active than just singing sad songs.
The movie ” Apna Desh” lived upto those standards. In this movie, the hero gets bashed up till the half time, but just at the stroke of interval, he has enough of being bashed, and he swears that he would get even, once the audience are back from the interval. And the hero, Rajesh Khanna lived upto his promise.
Dhishum dhishum sounds, which were few and far between and were only heard in Dara Singh movies till then, became fairly commonplace in mainstream movies of 1970s, beginning with movies like “Apna Desh”.
Of course, the movies did not give up on songs and dances, just because the hero felt like fighting. There were quite a few wonderful songs in this movie, which became popular. In fact, listening to songs on radio and loudspeakers, and then watching the movie to see how they were picturised was a divine experiience for most movie goers. At least that was certainly the case for a 8 year old kid like me.
The picturisation of “Sun Champa sun taara”, a song that I had heard blaring from loudspeakers many a time, left me spell bound. It was not I who had paid for the ticket, but some grown up, or else I would have said that this song itself was a paisa wasool song. In fact, I found the entire movie a paisa wasool experience.
I doubt that the readers of this blog can be made to go through the same experience that I went through when I watched this song on big screen 37 years ago, but this song is such that one can enjoy watching it even today, with hardly any loss of gloss in the intervening period.

Lovely song. One of the first dance songs I remember knowing as a kid. May be because it played quite often on chitrahaar.
Btw, awesome blog you’ve got. I’ve been browsing around for a while but didn’t post because it required registration. Finally created a login and this is my first comment.
Keep the good songs coming!
