Teri galiyon mein na rakhenge kadam

Usha Khanna, the sole female music director in Bollywood movies in the last 50 years remained confined to lesser movies for most of her career. But every once in a while, she tended to rise above the mediocrity of the movies she gave music in.
Hawas was one such movie. Few people then, or of course now may be aware of a movie by this name. But this one Rafi song from this movie has gone on to become a memorable song. “teri galiyon me na rakhenge kadam” has become almost an anthem for those jilted lovers who tended to populate every second movie in those days.
Every person knows that this song was sung by Rafi. What is not known to younger fans is that the lyricist Sawan Kumar tak and the music director Usha Khanna fell in love with each other and got married. Though they later separated, Sawan Kumar continued to employ Usha Khanna as music director in all his movies, which incidentally used to have the word “Sautan” in their title.
Usha Khanna in fact, briefly achieved top Binaca geetmala ranking for one such song, but that is a discussion for another day. This particular song, though it did not rank that high at the popularity stakes, has certainly gone down in history as one of the more memorable Rafi songs.

Anil Dhawan incidentally is the brother of David Dhawan, if I am not mistaken.

This is one of the most beautyful song by Rafi Sahab! The song definately sooth those who have broken hearts in mohabbat….! And what a music composition by Ushaji, hats of to her..!

Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Was a pretty popular song at that time. I remember it being sung a lot in the mid-70s. I had no clue which movie it was from. Then I heard it on Vividh Bharati and learnt that it was from Hawas. Only very recently (a couple of years ago), I saw the movie on TV while in India (I saw the movie just for this song, otherwise the movie is quite forgettable) and got to know that it is Anil Dhawan and Neetu Singh.
