#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 94 # Kalyanji-Anandji – Year 1975
———————————————–———————————————

Today 30th June 2020 is 92nd birth anniversary of Kalyanjibhai Virjibhai Shah (30 June 1928 – 24 August 2000) of the great music director duo Kalyanji-Anandji.

On this occasion as a tribute to him here is a song from the ‘1975’ movie ‘Rafoo Chakkar’. I vaguely remember to have watched this movie with my parents and brothers in my childhood. I was just around seven years old then (considering the date of release of this movie). However, the songs of this movie have always remained in my memory. I think they were very popular in those years and were frequently heard on loud speakers and radio. Particularly the songs ‘chhuk chhuk chhak chhak Bombay se Baroda tak’, ‘tumko mere dil ne’, ‘kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai’, ‘dil lena buri balaa hai’, ‘ae zamaane tu kar le sitam pe sitam’…

Almost all songs from this movie were good and I have a big nostalgia of the songs of this movie. So, when I became a member of this blog I had shared a couple of songs, and one of them ‘tumko mere dil ne’ was posted on 21.01.2014 (much later according to me, because when I joined the blog I always thought all songs of the seventies must be already there . 🙂

‘Tum ko mere dil ne’ has always been my big favorite and so is ‘kisi pe dil agar’ but then there is one more song from this movie which brings back memories for me and I am going to present this song today.
And since this song was pending since 2013, I thought I should go with it instead of taking another song when I was thinking of a post on this occasion today. All these years this song has been in my dormant memory associated with the name of this movie ‘Rafoo Chakkar’. I have no recollection of having watched this movie again either in theatre or on TV channels. I have only watched a couple of its songs on TV. I may have watched parts of this movie when it was being aired on TV.

“Rafoo Chakkar-1975’ was a presentation from the ‘House of Nadiadwala’. It was produced by I.A. Nadiadwala for ‘M.I. Films Pvt Ltd’. This movie was directed by Narinder Bedi.

Ajay Kumar was the chief assistant director while assistant director was Kapil Kapoor. Raj Bedi was the dialogue director.

Story of this movie was written by Jayant Dharmadhikari, whereas the dialogues were written by Kadar Khan. K.K. Shukla had written the screenplay of this movie.

Editing of this movie was done by Babubhai Thakkar.

It had Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Rajindernath, Faryal, Asrani, Master Chikkoo with Paintal, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum, Shetty, Viju Khote, Shamim, Surender Shetty, K.N. Singh, Sudhir, Bhagwan, MacMohan, Man Mohan, Habib, Jankidas, M. Rajan, Tiwari, Mohan Sherry, Hiralal, Rajan Haksar, Goga, Dalpat, Sapru and Kamran.

Lyrics were written by Gulshan Bawra and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Kanchan, Mahesh Kumar and Aziz Nazan were the playback singers who had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Jaikumar conducted the music while Frank Fernand was the arranger and Babla was the assistant in music of this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 02.01.1975.

In 1975 there were a ‘dozen’ of movies where Kalyanji-Anandji had composed the music for them. Here is the list;

Sno. Title Year Passed by Censor Board Lyricist Represented on the Blog</
1 Anokhaa 1975 02.04.1975 Indeewar, Sawan Kumar N
2 Apne Dushman 1975 19.11.1975 Verma Malik, Qamar Jalalabadi N
3 Bhoolaa Bhatkaa 1975 13.10.1975 Anand Bakshi
4 Chori Mera Kaam 1975 30.04.1975 Verma Malik Yes/Yippeeee’ed
5 Dharmaatmaa 1975 30.04.1975 Indeewar Y
6 Do Thug 1975 05.12.1975 Rajinder Krishan N
7 Faraar 1975 11.11.1975 Rajinder Krishan Y
8 Himaalaya Se Ooncha 1975 15.04.1975 Indeewar Y
9 Monto 1975 15.05.1975 Verma Malik
10 Rafoo Chakkar 1975 02.01.1975 Gulshan Bawra Y
11 Uljhan 1975 31.10.1975 M.G. Hashmat Y
12 Zoro 1975 31.10.1975 Verma Malik

None of the songs of this movie “Rafoo Chakkar-1975” make it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year. And only two compositions of Kalyanji-Anandji featured in that year’s list one from the previous years’ release ‘Haath Ki Safaai-1974’ i.e. ‘waadaa kar le sajnaa’ at number six and another from the movie ‘Dharmaatma-1975’ which was ‘tere chehre mein wo jaadu hai’ at number thirty-one.

The title song of ‘Uljhan-1975’ figured at number eleven in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala-1976’.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song which is sung by Aziz Nazan and Kanchan. On screen Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh are lip syncing the voices of Aziz Nazan and Kanchan whereas we can see Rajindernath, Paintal, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum and many others in the picturization of this song.
Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Rajindernath and Paintal are performing ‘hippies’ in disguise (not for viewers) to get release of the captivated Sulochana and Mumtaz Begum.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 36
—————————————————————————

This day ten years ago (viz 11 june 2010) saw as many as five songs being covered. Discussing as many as five songs in a day was quite rare those day. This feat was achieved only four times in previous seven months !

Following five ssongs were overed on 11 june 2010:-

SongMovie title-YearRemarksJeena kyaa aji pyaar binaaDhan Daulat – 198001 song posted (of 5)Gayaa bachpan jo aayi jawaaniAankhon Aankhon Mein – 1972All songs coveredMere man ke diyeParakh-1960All songs coveredMagar ae haseenaa e bekhabar Dholak-1951All songs coveredHam aankh michauli khelenge Khandaan-1942All songs covered

It is interesting to note that four films (out of five) covered that day are already YIPPEED. “Dhan Daulat”(1980) was on the other end of the spectrum. No other song from this movie has been discussed in last ten years !

Song Posted On
Jeena kyaa aji pyaar binaa 11.06.2010

“Dhan Daulat”(1980) was produced by Vinod Shah and directed by Harish Shah for Shilpkaar, Bombay. The movie had Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Mala Sinha, Pran, Premnath, Prem Chopra, Sujeet Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Kader Khan, Agha, Vikas Anand, Brahm Bhardwaj, Preeti Ganguli, Avtar Gill, Azad aka Azad Irani, Daljit Kaur, Yusuf Khan, Kirti Kumar, Manmauji, Amarnath Mukherjee, Pardesi, Madan Puri, Jagdish Raj, Ranvir Raj, Sajjan, Master Sandeep, Amol Sen Aka Amal Sen, Asit Sen aka Asit Kumar Sen, Master Raju Shrestha, Shyamlal, Shyam, Birbal etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it and only one song has been covered so far (as already mentioned above).

As “Blog Ten Year Challenge”, here is the second song from “Dhan Daulat”(1980) to appear in the blog. the song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. music is composed by R D Burman.

The song is picturised as a party song where a reluctant Neetu Singh is coerced to sing this song by Rishi Kapoor, with Prem Chopra egging her on. Sujeet Kumar, Azad irani etc are also present in this party.

The lyrics of this song were sent by Prakashchandra, whereas the devnagri script lyrics are by Avinash Scrapwala.

The audio version contains the fuull song, whereas the video only contains one stanza.

Hullo Atuldom

Continuing from last year, next song from “Doosra Aadmi”.

Movie made a debut on this blog with kya mausam hai , the most popular song. The next song to be posted was maathe pe lagaaike bindiya.

aao manaayen jashn e muhabbat was posted last year on this date to remember Majrooh Sultanpuri on his anniversary and also to wish Rajesh Roshan on his birthday.

This not-so-popular movie of the Rishi Kapoor -Neetu Singh jodi is rather slow moving on our blog as can be seen from the fact that after two songs in 2008 the next appeared in 2019. It had six songs here is the fourth today for the same purpose as last year – remembering Majroohsaab and wishing Rajesh Roshan a happy birthday.

We, the regular HFM fans, know that the movie had Shashi Kapoor in a guest role and Rakhee, Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor were part of the love quadrangle tha formed the basis of the movie. I say quadrangle because when Rakhee sees Rishi for the first time (in the movie) she feels that her dead fiance (Shashi Kapoor) is back. At the same time a married Rishi Kapoor takes a liking to Rakhee and her independent way of living which has adverse effects on his family life. Deven Verma and Parikshit Shani played important characters in the movie.

Today we have the typical roothna-manana song sung by Kishore Kumar and Pamela Chopra. The song teaches that it takes a few stanzas by the best songwriter to pacify a upset/angry lover or wife. And she may also join you in singing a few lines towards the end of the song. I don’t think this formula works in real-life.

Song-Jaan meri roothh gayi (Doosra Aadmi)(1977) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Pamela Chopra, Lyris-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Rajesh Roshan
Both

Lyrics

jaan meri rooth gayi
jaane kyun hamse
aafat mein
aafat mein pad gayi jaan
ho ho o
jaan meri rooth gayi jaane kyun hamse
aafat mein
hey
aafat mein pad gayi jaan
arre laakh kahoon ek nahin maane kasam se
aafat mein
haaye
aafat mein pad gayi jaan
ho ho jaan meri rooth gayi re

ho o ho o ho
ban jaao shola
ya chingaari
chhodoon nahin mai baanh tumhaari
ya yeh tamaasha dekhegi duniya
ya phir maano baat hamaari
ladna bhi hai tumse sanam
milna bhi tumse
aafat mein
hey hey
aafat mein pad gayi jaan
ho ho jaan meri rooth gayi re

naak pe gussa
aankhon mein masti
thhodi garajti thhodi barasti
naak pe gussa
ankhon mein masti
thhodi garajti thhodi barasti
choom naa le koi
aisi ada pe
honthon se chup hai
aankhon se hansti
peechhe hi pad jaaye bacho
peechhe hi pad jaaye bacho aise sanam se
aafat mein
aafat mein pad gayi jaan
ho ho

lakh kahoon ek nahin mane kasam se
aafat mein

hy hey
aafat mein pad gayi jaan
ho ho
jaan meri maan gayi maan gayi jaanoo
aafat se
hoye hoye
aafat se bach gayi jaan
ho ho
jaan meri maan gayi ee re ae

I was aware that today is the birth anniversary of Pran, but I was not aware that today is his 100th birth anniversary !

It was on this day 100 years ago that Pran (12 February 1920 – 12 July 2013) was born.

Pran was born in Lahore and he made his debut in films in Lahore in early 1940s. There, he soon graduated to lead roles. In “Khaandaan”(1942), he had acted opposite Noorjehaan. . After partition, he came to Bombay where he was a nobody and so he had to start from scratch there.

It was in Bombay that Pran began to get the roles of a villain and it waas in these roles that he made his mark. He started his stint in Bombay with “Ziddi”(1948). He played villains but no two roles of his were same. In every movie he brought something new to his acting. And his acting was so convincing that ordinary movie goers dreaded and dipised his roles. Very few people in India named their sons as Pran. That is the kind of impression he had created in the minds of movie goers. 🙂

In 1960s, his dark roles gradually started to become less dark, with doses of kindness and comedy in them and a time came when he became a character artist, beginning from “Upkaar”(1967). The distributors of “Upkaar”(1967) were very nervous, unsure how this new role of Pran would be received by the moviegoers who were so used to see him as a dreaded villain. Fortunately, the movie was a big hit and Praan’s role as Malang Chaacha was loved by moviegoers.

Pran had got to sing very few songs on screen as a villain, but he started to get songs as a character artist. And this process started with “Upkaar”(1967) itself. The song Kasme waade pyaar wafa turned out to be a much loved song, much to the relief of Kalkyanji Anandji, who were dreading that their composition would flop because it was to be picturised on Pran !

Subsequently, Pran has figured in quite a few songs in Hindi movies. And these songs became surprise hits. For instance, “Zanjeer”(1973) song Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi became the most popular song of the year in Binaca geetmala ! “Kasauti”(1974) song, Ham bolega to bologe ki bolta hai was my favourite song durings its time. Same was the case with the song Daru ki bottle me sahab paani bharta hai from “Majboor”(1974).

On the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of Pran, here is a song from “Zindaadil”(1975). The song is sung by Lata, Shailendra Singh and Mahendra Kapoor. Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a get together song. It is lip synced by Rishi Kapoor, Zaahira, Neetu singh and Pran.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala. Incidentally, he too shares his birthday with Pran. So we take this opportunity to wish him a happy birthday and many happy returns of the day. Today also happens to be the wedding aniversary of our regular Nitin Shah. We wish him and his better half on this occasion.

Quite a lively and appropriate song for the occasion it is.

आ आ आ आ आ
आ आ आ आ आ

Hullo Atuldom

Today is the date when we think of our favourite innovator of the 70s and 80s. The songs he composed for his debut, in the 1961 released “Chhote Nawaab”, were of a different flavour from the music he created in his later years. Of course, I don’t need to mention that today is Pachamda a.k.a R D Burman’s remembrance day.

It is 26 years since his passing and we, his fans, still talk of him in present tense. We do not tire of describing his love for experimenting with sounds- using a glass and spoon or broom and comb to create the opening note of a song; or asking an artist to gargle warm water to provide a dramatic effect to a scene. Asha Bhonsle has often mentioned how she had to practice breathing to sing “piya tu ab toh aaja”.

My quest for a song to go with this post lead me to the blog’s “List-of-songs-by-movies” page of the blog and I found that we have yiippeeeed all of RD’s initial movies viz: – Chhote Nawab, Bhoot Bangla, Teesra Kaun, Teesri Manzil, Pati Patni, Chandan ka palna, Bahaaron Ke Sapne, Abhilasha, Pyaar Ka Mausam, and Waaris i.e. his contribution to the world of HFM in the 60s has been fully represented on the blog.

Of the movies of the next decade, the more popular ones are yiippeeeed and that is a longer list which I recommend the readers to find for themselves. Same is the case with movies of the 80s where we find that many popular movies are yet to even debut on the blog and some are one or two songs away from being yyiippeeeed. That means we are spoiled for choice as to which song will go with the post. Then the next point to be considered is whether we want a song sung by Panchamda or just a song with just his music. Then I thought if I wanted a solo, duet- all male or male-female duet etc etc. The possible songs kept changing even as I wrote the post and finally, I did an akad-bakad-bambe-boo and landed on this song which will help the concerned movie attain Yiippeeeehood.

Following songs from the movie have been covered so far:

Sapna mera toot gaya
Hamne tumko dekha tumne hamko dekha aise
khullam khulla pyaar karenge hum donon
Ek main aur ek tu

For the story and personal thoughts connected with “Khel Khel Mein” a visit to the above posts will suffice. Today’s song is perfect for the weather North of India and many parts of the northern hemisphere of the world are currently experiencing- supremely cold winds and snow in many areas. I have seen this movie a number of times. If I am not wrong, other than at the time of its release in the 70s, only the mukhada and first antara are there in the movie. With this Khel Khel Mein has attained Yyiippeeeehood.

Let us get to the song without much ado. It is an RDB- Gulshan Bawra- Kishore Kumar- Asha Bhosle classic.

Lyrics

aaye lo pyaar ke din aaye
mil jaane de apne saayein
woh bhi iss tarah,
mil jaayen jis tarah
lehron se lehrein jawaan hoke
aaja re aaja re,

aaja re aaja re

aaja re aaja re
aaja re aaja re
aaja re aaja re

aaye lo pyar ke din aaye

sang chalein toh manzil door nahin hai
jahaan bhi tu hai manzil meri wahin hai
ho ho ho
sang chale to manzil dur nahin hai
arre jahan bhi tu hai manzil meri wahin hai
yeh kaarvaan chalta rahe
chaahe jahaan jalta rahe
aaye lo pyar ke din aaye
mil jaane de apne saaye
wo bhi is tarah,
mil jayen jis tarah
lehron se lehrein jawaan hoke
aaja re aaja re

aaja re aaja re
aaja re aaja re
aaja re aaja re
aaja re aaja re
aaye lo pyar ke din aaye

yoon hi rahein nazar mein jawaan nazaare
iss vaadi mein gunje geet hamare
ho ho ho
yoon hi rahein nazar mein jawaan nazaare

iss vaadi mein gunje geet hamare
hansti rahe yeh zindagi
badhti rahe dil ki lagi

aaye lo pyar ke din aaye
mil jaane de apne saaye
wo bhi is tarah,
mil jayen jis tarah
lehron se lehrein jawaan hoke
aaja re aaja re

“Parvarish”(1977) was directed by Manmohan Desai for A G Films, Bombay. This movie had Shammi Kpoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Nitu Singh, Shabana Azmi, Kadar Khan, Amjad Khan, Dev Kumar, Indrani Mukherji, Hina Kausar, Master Ratan, Master Tito, Chand Usmani, Sheikh, Bhushan Tiwari, Viju Khote, Tom Alter, Yusuf, Meena, Baby Shalu, Moolchand etc in it.

This movie had six songs in it. Four of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata and Usha Mangeshkar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

This song is picturised on Shabana Azmi and Nitu Singh who play pickpockets on the streets of Bombay. While Nitu Singh was a natural in such a role, Shabana Azmi was a total misfit in this role. So movie makers rightly avoided goving her similar non serious roles in future.

Hullo Atuldom

The song with this post is a walk down memory lane for me. I had seen this movie with my dad in the movie hall and subsequently he had purchased the cassette of its songs too. The songs from this album along with those of “Yaraana”, “Qurbaani” and “Sholay” used to be played constantly on holidays and I had learnt all the songs from these ‘by heart’ prompting the elders in the family to comment that if I had shown similar passion in studies I would have been a topper, not that I was a bad student but I used to top only in mathematics and was reasonably good at all other extra or co-curricular activities.

But that is not the subject of this post.

The subject of this post is Zeenat Aman. It is her birthday today and I would like to present this song to emphasise on how stylish she was.
The song is from the 1978 release “Heeralal Pannalal” about which Atulji has written a very interesting post with this song .

“Heeralal Pannalal” made its debut on the blog with the Pancham- Asha Bhonsle duet on the occasion of Amjad Khans’ birthday. The next song posted for Premnath’s birthday was the second version of the first song posted. It was treated as two posts as the lyrics were different and RD had given entirely different look to them. The movie has six songs and the fourth came on the blog for Shashi Kapoor’s birthday and the fifth one is here for Zeenat’s birthday. I think we should rename this movie as Birthday Special. Whatsay?

The songs were the handiwork of Majrooh and R D Burman. Today’s song is a stage song. The song happens as the two innocent and kind hearted heroes are trying to run away from some goons and land up (drop on would be more correct) on the stage as the heroines are awaiting the arrival of two professional dancers to help them in some inter college competition. The professionals walk-in just as song is coming to a close. This is the first time that the couples meet.

Let us pray for the speedy recovery of Lata Mangeshkar who sings today’s song with Asha, Bupinder and Kishore Kumar.
Happy Birthday to you Zeenie a.k.a Zeenat Aman.

“Amar Akbar Anthony”(1977) an archtypically Manmohan Desai directed movie, reminds me of an indulgent parent who, when he comes back home to his little ones brings them lots and lot of goodies that the kids were so eagerly looking forward to. The kids just would not have enough of the goodies.

The movie, a multistarrer, which was a new fashion in India, after the success of “Sholay”(1975), boasted a who is who of stars of those days- Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Shabana azmi, Neetu Singh were the three romantic pairs. Pran and Nirupa Roy play the parents. Villains are Jeewan, Ranjeet, Yusuf Khan. Other characters in the movie include Mukri, Nazeer Hussain, Kamal Kapoor, Pratima Devi etc. Even Helen makes a cameo appearance.

Most people who are into HFM have already watched this movie. That too multiple times. If you are an Indian, then this movie must have influences you in one way or the other. This movie has scenes, dialogues, coincidences etc that have become stuff of legends. They also are constant source of jokes, memes, amusing anecdotes etc.

This movie had seven songs. Six songs from this movie have been covered in the past.

Here are the details of the songs from the movie that have been discussed in the past :-

S N Song Song number in blog Date of posting
1 My name is Anthony Gonsalves 3040 28-Sep-10
2 Parda hai parda 9189 23-Dec-13
3 Hamko tumse ho gaya hai pyaar kya karen 11111 9-May-15
4 Anhoni ko honi kar de honi ko anhoni 11963 31-Mar-16
4 Khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin 14896 26-Feb-19

The discussions of these songs in the movie were no less fun than the fun that we may have had while watching this movie.

This song made its debut in the blog with the song My name is Anthony Gonsalves . The date was 29 september 2010. It was a guest post by a guest poster who had discovered the blog just a few months ago. Santosh Ojha, the contributor, was a diehard Amitabh Bachchan fan and he had watched this movie in Nagpur during its first run just days before his class X examination, not once but thrice !

His observations on the movie scenes and story, alongwith his school day experiences, makes this writeup a great fun to read.
In fact, this song itself has an amusing beginning:

You see the whole country of this system
is juxtapositioned by the hemoglobin in the atmosphere ,
because you are a sophisticated rhetorician
intoxicated by the exuberance of your own verbosity

🙂

The next song was covered three years later in 2013. This too was a guest post, and it was by Peevesie’s mom, who may have watched this movie a few million times.

The third song writeup from this movie turned out to be a very very special occasion for the blog. This song was the only song in history that has the voices of Mukesh, Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Lata together. This song was the post number 11111 for the blog and it was written by our own Sudhir Jee. It was a century post for him as well as for all the abovementioned legendary singer. It was a century post for Laxmikant Pyarelal as well.

Four more songs have been covered after that. Writeup for these songs were by Peevesie’s mom. Four writeups out of six ! It just shown how much the songs of this movie mean to her !

What is the only song left to be covered ? It is yet another fun song viz “Tayyab Ali Pyaar ka dushman hay haay”. This song is sung by Rafi and chorus, with a few words by Mukri. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a song where Akbar (Rishi Kapoor) is seen heckling Tayyab Ali (Mukri), the father of Salma (Neetu Singh), for coming in the way of their love.

This song, like the other songs of this movie, is best enjoyed while watching the movie in a movie hall in 1970s. The response of the public, especially the coin throwing front staller junta (appropriately names chawanni chaap janta 🙂 ) is an experience that can no longer be savoured. This experience has become extinct with time.

Incidentally, unlike Santosh Ojha, I myself had not watched this movie during its first run. My movie watching spree began in 1978, and I watched this movie during its second run, which is not the same as watching it during its maiden run, of course.

With this song, all the seven songs of “Amar Akbar Anthony”(1977) are covered in the blog and the movie joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

Hullo to all of Atuldom

Welcome to a post which will get a reaction of “Yeh gaana baaki hai???” And I am sure Atulji will put this song under the category “How did I forget to post this song earlier?”.

In the 70s, and for all the 43 years since, this song has been extremely popular. It is a love song where the young couple meet on the sly, in the middle of the night. It was sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar for a sweet seventeen Neetu Singh and a handsome/ charming 23-year-old Rishi Kapoor. It had very simple choreography by PL Raj that made the pair look very adorable. It was written by Gulshan Bawra and set to tune by our today’s birthday boy.

27th June our dear RD Burman would have turned 80. Like I have written in my post which accompanied the song to remember Kishore Kumar on his last birthday, how I wish Pancham or RDB had not left this world when he did. Then the treasure trove of wonderful songs would have been overflowing. But then that was not to be and we lost him in 1994. But there is still a treasure trove which gives us a lot of songs which if played continuously will last us for days on end. There is a song for every mood. Currently as I write this, I have chosen some random songs on amazon prime music which began with “Chaand Churaa Ke Laya Hoon” (‘Devta’, 1978) went on to “Meri Bheegi Bheegi Si Palkon Pe” (‘Anaamika’, 1973) followed by “O Maanjhi Re” (‘Khushboo’, 1975) and has another 20 songs which include “Bangle Ke Peeche Teri Beri Ke Neeche” (‘Samaadhi’, 1972), “Roz Roz Dali Dali” (‘Angoor’, 1982), and “Mera Pyaar. . . Shalimar” (‘Shaimar’, 1978). Now I must admit I love RDB songs and what I chose to hear were songs which I have not heard in a while. I am totally impartial in my selections. 🙂

Now on to today’s song. Thank you, RD Burman, for bequeathing to us a huge set of songs to remember you with.

Editor comment-With this song, Asha Bhonsle completes 2600 songs as a playback singer in the blog.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

I love masala movies as much as I love movies which are close to reality. I am of the opinion that movies should make us forget our daily tensions as much as entertain us. There were a few movie makers during my growing up years whose films were a must-see for my parents as they were entertaining as well as showed middle-class families and their ways. These movies were generally targeted towards family audiences – ‘Khoobsurat’ (1980), ‘Golmaal’ (1979), ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979), ‘Khatta Meetha’ (1977), ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975) etc fell in this category and I must thank Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chaterjee for these gems.

Then there were these absolute entertainers which needed us to keep “logic at home” before going to see them. Else how does one explain the story of a pair of twins one of whom looks much older than the other -‘Dharam Veer’ (1977) and ‘Suhaag’ (1979). How does one explain the jumps in the climax; the heroes begin punching the villains on board a ship – belonging to a Rajput clan- that is anchored at sea but sing romantic songs and songs of friendship in the environs of Kashmir (in ‘Dharam Veer’). Or the heroes are following the villain who has kidnapped their mother through the streets of Mumbai on the way to the Juhu airport (which used to be where people parked their private aircrafts formerly) but strangely the streets look like some foreign land – turns out it was Singapore!! But when the climax scene is getting over, and the villains meet their final fate, all the places that Mumbaikars are familiar with make an appearance on the screen (in ‘Suhaag’).

Now ‘Suhaag’ and ‘Dharam Veer’ are two movies which I must have seen a number of times (have lost count) in spite of all these glaring ‘logic-less-ness’ (I know there is no such word in English language). There are a few other movies which fall under the ‘entertainer without logic’ category- ‘Chacha Bhatija’ (1977), ‘Parvarish’ (1977), ‘Naseeb’ (1981), ‘Desh Premee’ (1982), ‘Coolie’ (1983), ‘Mard’ (1985) – which I have seen about 100 times (not exaggerating). And it seems the maker of these Mr. Manmohan Desai had the confidence that his audience will lap it all up without questions.

In recent times I have been seeing these series of videos on YouTube wherein Amitabh Bachchan (the permanent fixture in most of the above-mentioned Manmohan Desai movies) in company of Rishi Kapoor was relating how they enacted all those scenes, as directed by Manji (Manmohan Desai’s pet name apparently) even if they were not personally convinced that there was any logic in the scene. The duo specially drew attention to the “mother of all logiclessness” scene – three people lying in a row and donating blood to an accident victim. Now there is nothing illogical in three people donating blood; but blood from the three being collected into a single bottle? And a single tube carrying blood to the patient!!! And has anyone heard of the blood group of RH. Also, Amitabh pointed out how Manji thought the villains were brainless as they could not see through the disguise of 3 people who have gate-crashed into a wedding and singing on top of their voices – ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.

Anyway, such were the movies of Manmohan Desai in the 70s. He started making movies in the 60s with ‘Chhalia’ (1960) being his directorial debut. Which was followed by ‘Bluffmaster’ (1963), ‘Budtameez’ (1966), ‘Sachaa Jhootha’ (1970), ‘Kismat’ (1968) etc. Of the 20 films he made in a career span of 29 years 13 were successful. He had writers like Kadar Khan, KK Shukla, Prayag Raj, Salim Javed, Anand Bakshi, Sahir, Qamar Jalalabadi, Gulshan Bawra and Shailendra pen the stories and songs for these movies. He had also worked with Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmi Pyare, RD Burman and Anu Malik for music direction in his movies.

Today’s post is to remember the magic of Manmohan Desai on his 82nd birth anniversary and what better song than the one that shows his logical thinking. One patient getting blood from three donors all at once. 🙂

Song-Khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin (Amar Akbar anthony)(1977) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Chorus

Lyrics

maa sirf nataa nahin
yeh kuch aur bhi hai
maa se bichad ke bhi
ye toot jaata nahin
yeh sach hai koi kahaani nahin
aaa aa aaa aaa aa
yeh sach hai koi kahaani nahin
khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin
khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin
khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin

aaa aa aaa aa

phoolon ki pehchaan hai rangon boo se
pehchaane jaate hain insaan lahoo se
insaan lahoo se
haan isse badi kuchh nishaani nahin
aaa aa aaa aa
haan isse badi kuch nishaani nahin
khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin
khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin
khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin

aaa aa aaa aaa aaaaa aaa
aaaa aaaa aaa aaa aa

ye khoon jis ne paida kiya hai
wo doodh maa ka sab ne piya hai,
sab ne piya hai
kya is ki keemat chukaani nahin
aaa aa aaa aa
kya iski keemat chukaani nahin
khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin
khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin
khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin

आs आ आs आs आsss आs
आss आss आs आs आ
