“Amar Akbar Anthony”(1977) an archtypically Manmohan Desai directed movie, reminds me of an indulgent parent who, when he comes back home to his little ones brings them lots and lot of goodies that the kids were so eagerly looking forward to. The kids just would not have enough of the goodies.

The movie, a multistarrer, which was a new fashion in India, after the success of “Sholay”(1975), boasted a who is who of stars of those days- Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Shabana azmi, Neetu Singh were the three romantic pairs. Pran and Nirupa Roy play the parents. Villains are Jeewan, Ranjeet, Yusuf Khan. Other characters in the movie include Mukri, Nazeer Hussain, Kamal Kapoor, Pratima Devi etc. Even Helen makes a cameo appearance.

Most people who are into HFM have already watched this movie. That too multiple times. If you are an Indian, then this movie must have influences you in one way or the other. This movie has scenes, dialogues, coincidences etc that have become stuff of legends. They also are constant source of jokes, memes, amusing anecdotes etc.

This movie had seven songs. Six songs from this movie have been covered in the past.

Here are the details of the songs from the movie that have been discussed in the past :-

S N Song Song number in blog Date of posting
1 My name is Anthony Gonsalves 3040 28-Sep-10
2 Parda hai parda 9189 23-Dec-13
3 Hamko tumse ho gaya hai pyaar kya karen 11111 9-May-15
4 Anhoni ko honi kar de honi ko anhoni 11963 31-Mar-16
4 Khoon khoon hota hai paani nahin 14896 26-Feb-19
5 Shirdi waale Saibaba aaya hai tere dar pe sawaali 15199 4-Sep-19

The discussions of these songs in the movie were no less fun than the fun that we may have had while watching this movie.

This song made its debut in the blog with the song My name is Anthony Gonsalves . The date was 29 september 2010. It was a guest post by a guest poster who had discovered the blog just a few months ago. Santosh Ojha, the contributor, was a diehard Amitabh Bachchan fan and he had watched this movie in Nagpur during its first run just days before his class X examination, not once but thrice !

His observations on the movie scenes and story, alongwith his school day experiences, makes this writeup a great fun to read.
In fact, this song itself has an amusing beginning:

You see the whole country of this system
is juxtapositioned by the hemoglobin in the atmosphere ,
because you are a sophisticated rhetorician
intoxicated by the exuberance of your own verbosity

🙂

The next song was covered three years later in 2013. This too was a guest post, and it was by Peevesie’s mom, who may have watched this movie a few million times.

The third song writeup from this movie turned out to be a very very special occasion for the blog. This song was the only song in history that has the voices of Mukesh, Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Lata together. This song was the post number 11111 for the blog and it was written by our own Sudhir Jee. It was a century post for him as well as for all the abovementioned legendary singer. It was a century post for Laxmikant Pyarelal as well.

Four more songs have been covered after that. Writeup for these songs were by Peevesie’s mom. Four writeups out of six ! It just shown how much the songs of this movie mean to her !

What is the only song left to be covered ? It is yet another fun song viz “Tayyab Ali Pyaar ka dushman hay haay”. This song is sung by Rafi and chorus, with a few words by Mukri. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a song where Akbar (Rishi Kapoor) is seen heckling Tayyab Ali (Mukri), the father of Salma (Neetu Singh), for coming in the way of their love.

This song, like the other songs of this movie, is best enjoyed while watching the movie in a movie hall in 1970s. The response of the public, especially the coin throwing front staller junta (appropriately names chawanni chaap janta 🙂 ) is an experience that can no longer be savoured. This experience has become extinct with time.

Incidentally, unlike Santosh Ojha, I myself had not watched this movie during its first run. My movie watching spree began in 1978, and I watched this movie during its second run, which is not the same as watching it during its maiden run, of course.

With this song, all the seven songs of “Amar Akbar Anthony”(1977) are covered in the blog and the movie joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

Hullo to all of Atuldom

Welcome to a post which will get a reaction of “Yeh gaana baaki hai???” And I am sure Atulji will put this song under the category “How did I forget to post this song earlier?”.

In the 70s, and for all the 43 years since, this song has been extremely popular. It is a love song where the young couple meet on the sly, in the middle of the night. It was sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar for a sweet seventeen Neetu Singh and a handsome/ charming 23-year-old Rishi Kapoor. It had very simple choreography by PL Raj that made the pair look very adorable. It was written by Gulshan Bawra and set to tune by our today’s birthday boy.

27th June our dear RD Burman would have turned 80. Like I have written in my post which accompanied the song to remember Kishore Kumar on his last birthday, how I wish Pancham or RDB had not left this world when he did. Then the treasure trove of wonderful songs would have been overflowing. But then that was not to be and we lost him in 1994. But there is still a treasure trove which gives us a lot of songs which if played continuously will last us for days on end. There is a song for every mood. Currently as I write this, I have chosen some random songs on amazon prime music which began with “Chaand Churaa Ke Laya Hoon” (‘Devta’, 1978) went on to “Meri Bheegi Bheegi Si Palkon Pe” (‘Anaamika’, 1973) followed by “O Maanjhi Re” (‘Khushboo’, 1975) and has another 20 songs which include “Bangle Ke Peeche Teri Beri Ke Neeche” (‘Samaadhi’, 1972), “Roz Roz Dali Dali” (‘Angoor’, 1982), and “Mera Pyaar. . . Shalimar” (‘Shaimar’, 1978). Now I must admit I love RDB songs and what I chose to hear were songs which I have not heard in a while. I am totally impartial in my selections. 🙂

Now on to today’s song. Thank you, RD Burman, for bequeathing to us a huge set of songs to remember you with.

Editor comment-With this song, Asha Bhonsle completes 2600 songs as a playback singer in the blog.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

I love masala movies as much as I love movies which are close to reality. I am of the opinion that movies should make us forget our daily tensions as much as entertain us. There were a few movie makers during my growing up years whose films were a must-see for my parents as they were entertaining as well as showed middle-class families and their ways. These movies were generally targeted towards family audiences – ‘Khoobsurat’ (1980), ‘Golmaal’ (1979), ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979), ‘Khatta Meetha’ (1977), ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975) etc fell in this category and I must thank Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chaterjee for these gems.

Then there were these absolute entertainers which needed us to keep “logic at home” before going to see them. Else how does one explain the story of a pair of twins one of whom looks much older than the other -‘Dharam Veer’ (1977) and ‘Suhaag’ (1979). How does one explain the jumps in the climax; the heroes begin punching the villains on board a ship – belonging to a Rajput clan- that is anchored at sea but sing romantic songs and songs of friendship in the environs of Kashmir (in ‘Dharam Veer’). Or the heroes are following the villain who has kidnapped their mother through the streets of Mumbai on the way to the Juhu airport (which used to be where people parked their private aircrafts formerly) but strangely the streets look like some foreign land – turns out it was Singapore!! But when the climax scene is getting over, and the villains meet their final fate, all the places that Mumbaikars are familiar with make an appearance on the screen (in ‘Suhaag’).

Now ‘Suhaag’ and ‘Dharam Veer’ are two movies which I must have seen a number of times (have lost count) in spite of all these glaring ‘logic-less-ness’ (I know there is no such word in English language). There are a few other movies which fall under the ‘entertainer without logic’ category- ‘Chacha Bhatija’ (1977), ‘Parvarish’ (1977), ‘Naseeb’ (1981), ‘Desh Premee’ (1982), ‘Coolie’ (1983), ‘Mard’ (1985) – which I have seen about 100 times (not exaggerating). And it seems the maker of these Mr. Manmohan Desai had the confidence that his audience will lap it all up without questions.

In recent times I have been seeing these series of videos on YouTube wherein Amitabh Bachchan (the permanent fixture in most of the above-mentioned Manmohan Desai movies) in company of Rishi Kapoor was relating how they enacted all those scenes, as directed by Manji (Manmohan Desai’s pet name apparently) even if they were not personally convinced that there was any logic in the scene. The duo specially drew attention to the “mother of all logiclessness” scene – three people lying in a row and donating blood to an accident victim. Now there is nothing illogical in three people donating blood; but blood from the three being collected into a single bottle? And a single tube carrying blood to the patient!!! And has anyone heard of the blood group of RH. Also, Amitabh pointed out how Manji thought the villains were brainless as they could not see through the disguise of 3 people who have gate-crashed into a wedding and singing on top of their voices – ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.

Anyway, such were the movies of Manmohan Desai in the 70s. He started making movies in the 60s with ‘Chhalia’ (1960) being his directorial debut. Which was followed by ‘Bluffmaster’ (1963), ‘Budtameez’ (1966), ‘Sachaa Jhootha’ (1970), ‘Kismat’ (1968) etc. Of the 20 films he made in a career span of 29 years 13 were successful. He had writers like Kadar Khan, KK Shukla, Prayag Raj, Salim Javed, Anand Bakshi, Sahir, Qamar Jalalabadi, Gulshan Bawra and Shailendra pen the stories and songs for these movies. He had also worked with Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmi Pyare, RD Burman and Anu Malik for music direction in his movies.

Today’s post is to remember the magic of Manmohan Desai on his 82nd birth anniversary and what better song than the one that shows his logical thinking. One patient getting blood from three donors all at once. 🙂

Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)- Song number 4
———————————————

“Parvarish”(1977) was directed by Manmohan Desai for A G Films, Bombay. This movie had Shammi Kpoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Nitu Singh, Shabana Azmi, Kadar Khan, Amjad Khan, Dev Kumar, Indrani Mukherji, Hina Kausar, Master Ratan, Master Tito, Chand Usmani, Sheikh, Bhushan Tiwari, Viju Khote, Tom Alter, Yusuf, Meena, Baby Shalu, Moolchand etc in it.

This movie has six songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past. This movie made its debut in the blog on 7 february 2009, viz on this day ten years ago. The song was Aji thahro zara thahro.. Jaate ho jaane jaana.

So this movie provided me an opportunity to discuss another song from the movie after exactly ten years. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

This song is picturised on Nitu Singh and Amitabh Bachchan. I vaguely recall that our two heroes Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna play cops and the two heroines Neetu Singh and Shabana Azmi play small time crooks. This being a Hindi movie that too a Manmohan Desai movie, such twains are bound to meet and fall in love after initial chhed chhad etc.

I did not watch any movies from 1972 and 1977 and this movie, like many great movies of my formative years fell in this period. I watched this movie much later in 1980s during summer vacations. Watching the movie nearly one decade later in second or third run of the movie was not th same as it would have been if the movie was released in 1977.

This song, nevetheless is a good song to listen to, and it was a popular song of its time.

So, here is a song from a movie released in 1977 which watched by me in 1984, whose first song was covered in the blog on 7 february 2009 and whose fourth song is being covered in the blog on 7 february 2019. How time seems to have flown as hypersonic speed !

Song-Aaiye shauq se kahiye(Parvarish)(1977) Singers- Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

aapka to andaaz hai bada pyaara
kamre mein aap kya aaye
naqsha badal gaya saara

main bhi yahi sochti
miley na miley mauqa phir ye dobaara
ek do ghadi miley to sabki khidamat karte jaaiye

thahro udhar nazar kar lo
koi dekho aa rahaa hai
thahro udhar nazar kar lo
ham apna munh idhar kar len
tum apna munh udhar kar lo
chhup nahin sakoge dear
sundar mukhda tum chaahe jidhar kar lo
time aapne ghalat chuna hai
koshish mat farmaaiye

aji kaam vaam ko goli maaro
ham to hain aapke ghulaam
to aaiye
baithiye kahiye
kya hai ji aapka naam

aji naam vaam mein kya rakha hai
ham to hain aapke ghulaam

“Kaala Patthar”(1979) was directed by Yash Chopra for Yashraj Films Bombay.

This movie was a multi starrer movie and it had Shashi Kapoor, Rakhi, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Neetu Singh, Parveen Babi, Prem Chopra, Parikshat Sahni, Romesh Sharma, (special apopearance), Poonam Dhillon (special appearance), Manmohan Krishan, Madan Puri, Ifthikar, Satyen Kappu, Yunus Parwez, Geeta Sidharth, Gautam Sareen, Sharat Saxena, MacMohan, Mahaan, Sudhir Dalwai, Sudha Chopra, Harish, Mohan Sherry, Vikas Anand, Jagdeesh Raj, Suresh Oberoi, Prem Sagar, Pardesi, Nazir Kashmiri, Ashok Rajdan etc in it.

The movie was released with great fanfare and it was expected to be a blockbuster. But the movie received lukewarm response from the movie goers, much to the surprise of experts. Subsequently it was concluded that Indian audience do not patronise movies that depict disasters. They are into escapist stuff rather than into tales based on real life disaster. “Kaala Patthar”(1979) was inspired from the Chasnala mine disaster that had taken place on 27 december 1975.

Chasnala mine was located adjacent to an abandoned mine (separated by a wall of coal) that tended to get filled with rain water. A panel of experts had recommended that water accumulation in that abandoned mine was required to be avoided and secondly the barrier of coal separating this abandoned mine from adjacent locations was to be left untouched.

The recommendations were disregarded. Permission was sought and obtained to mine coal from the barrier.

As coal from this barrier was being mined, the coal wall separating this mine from the abandoned water filled mine caved in and water flooded the Chasnala mine, killing 372 miners who were working inside the mine.

This incident was the biggest industrial tragedy of India till that time and subsequently it was overtaken by Bhopal gas tragedy on 2 and 3 december 1984.

Coming to the movie, the movie had six songs in it. Five songs have been covered in the past. Here are their details:-

Song Title

Post Date

Ik raastaa hai zindagi 2970 15-Sep-10
Ishq aur mushq kade na chhupde 5273 9-Jan-12
Baahon mein teri masti ke ghere 6005 24-May-12
Mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke 14337 12-May-18
Dhoom mache dhoom 14761 24-Nov-18

The sixth and final song from the movie is sung by Lata and chorus. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The song is picturised as a wedding ritual song where Neetu Singh lip syncs the song. The picturisation shows Poonam Dhillon playing the bride and Romesh Sharma the groom while almost the entire starcast seems to be attending the wedding function.

This song has gone on to become one of several must sung songs in Indian weddings.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala long long ago in 2013.

With this song, all the songs of “Kaala Patthar”(1979)have been covered and the movie joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Blog Day : 3781 Post No. : 14761

I in this blog often talk about “natural” landmarks and “artificial” landmarks for the blog. “Natutral” landmaks for the blog are those that are intuitive, viz. century of songs in the blog, and later century of songs in the blog for an artist, a contributor etc.

Later, when we began to keep track of blog related statistics, we became aware when a duo of singers completed their century of duet songs, or the blog itself completed a century (or its multiple) of days.

Many of these “artificial” (more accurately “derived” or “secondary”) landmarks went unnoticed in the early days of the blog. For instance, we completed several hundred days and also thousand days in the blog but we remain blissfully unaware. In fact, the level of blissful unawareness was such that we did not even noticed it when the blog completed one year of its existence on 19 july 2009. 🙂

We have come a long way since.

While many of these landmarks events have to be created by effort, there are some landmarks that happen on their own. Time related landmarks, viz hundreds of days or thousands of days get achieved with time.

Likewise, number of visitors in the blog also happen with time, though that is dependent on factors like ability of the blog to attract visitors.

This blog had a humble beginning on 19 july 2008. During its early days, it attracted less than 100 visitors daily. There were only 406 visitors for the blog during july 2008, the month when this blog started.

I regarded it as a “landmark” occasion when the blog clocked more than one hundred visits for the first time. It was on 16 august 2008, the day of Rakhi festival, when I covered the iconic Rakhi song Bhaiyya mere raakhi ke bandhan ko nibhaana .

The blog averaged 31 visitors a day in july 2008 and 72 visitors a day in august 2008 before breaking into the three figure region with 276 visitors per day during september 2008. 23 january 2009 was the first day when this blog received more than one thousand visitors in a day. 1145 visitors arrived on the blog on that day. The blog reached four figure a day mark for the first time during february 2009 with 1069 visitors daily. It was in june 2011 that the 2000 mark was breached for the first time. An average of 2226 visitors visited daily during this month. It took only two more months to reach the 3000 visitors a day mark. August 2011 saw 3109 visitors daily in the blog. The next peak arrived in october 2011. It was not 4000 mark or 5000 mark or even 6000 mark, rather an average of 7224 visiors per day that was achieved in this month ! On one particular day, viz 19 october 2011, as many as 10630 visitors arrived at the site !

It was too good to last though. By now we have settled at an average of over 3000 visitors daily.

In the process, the blog recorded its first one million visits on 25 october 2010, after 829 days. The subsequent million visits have come rather more quickly, as can be expected. The third millionth mark was reached the fastest- in just 152 days. Now a days, it is taking around 300 odd days (nearly ten months ) to reach one million visitos mark.

The blog clocked 10 million visits on 14 january 2018 at around 22:30 IST. The 11th million visitor was clocked on 22 november 2018 at around the same time.

Here is the summary of the eleven million visitors in the blog so far:-

Number of Visitors Date when achieved Blog day days taken for the million visits
1 million 25-Oct-10 829 days 829
2 millions 07-Nov-11 1207 days 378
3 millions 30-Apr-12 1359 days 152
4 millions 10-Dec-12 1606 days 247
5 millions 29-Oct-13 1929 days 323
6 millions 12-Oct-14 2277 days 348
7 millions 04-Jul-15 2542 days 265
8 millions 20-Apr-16 2833 days 291
9 millions 24-Feb-17 3144 days 311
10 millions 14-Jan-18 3466 days 332
11 millions 22-Nov-18 3779 days 313

I was wondering what song to discuss on the occasion. Finally I zeroed in on a joyous song from “Kaala Pathhar”(1979). This song is sung by Rafi, Lata, S K Mahan, Mahendra Kapoor and chorus. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The picturisation shows almost the entire star cast (this was a multi starrer movie !) – viz Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Neetu Singh, Parveen Babi etc.

The video version of this song from “Kaala Patthar”(1979) is nearly six minutes long. But the audio version is even longer (nearly eight minutes long). I have provided both version of the some here.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their continued support and encouragement. It goes without saying that it was the support and encouragement of music lovers that helped the blog achieve this impressive number of visits from music lovers. Here is hoping that this musical bandwagon will continue on its merry ways with many more landmarks to achieve enroute.

Blog Day : 3778 Post No. : 14757

‘Dhongee’ (censor certificate 23-12-1976), was a movie directed by Ashok Roy and produced by Kant Kumar productions. It seems to have had a delayed release (Wikipedia says it was released 4th May 1979). It has a starcast of Randhir Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Asrani, Sujit Kumar, Farida Jalal, Iftikhar, and Premnath. Rakesh Roshan had a friendly appearance. The lyricist to this movie was Anand Bakshi and music director was Rahul Dev Burman. The movie had five songs and Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Amit Kumar were the playback singers. One song of this film – “Haaye Re Haaye Tera Ghunghta” – has been posted earlier, as a contribution by Pamir Harvey where a brief outline of the movie is provided. This song is popular to this day. I remember that sometime in the late 90s or early 2000 there was a remix version to this song which triggered the memory of this song. As I sat to write this post I discovered that there has been another version of this song which has been used in a recent movie titled ‘Paisa Vasool’ (2004) – I don’t know anything about this recent movie.

Continuing after seeing the movie 🙂

So, ‘Dhongee’ is the usual masaala stuff, with a brother (Randhir Kapoor) and sister (Farida Jalal) loving and helping each other with wooing their prospective fathers-in-laws (Raj Mehra and Satyen Kappu). The brother’s aim is to fulfil his ‘dead’ father’s promise to the groom’s father and see that his sister lives a happy married life. On the way to fulfilling this he meets with an accident and ‘dies’. The insurance amount that his sister gets post the brother’s death is used by his fiancée (Neetu Singh) and her father to get the sister married. This is one part of the movie. But it is not even ‘interval time’ in the movie. Now begins the tale. The brother has actually survived the accident, has been unconscious for about 2 months, tended by a Nepali Gurkha – typically named Bahadur; recovers just in time to remember his sister’s wedding date; rushes home to witness the wedding without being seen by anyone. Now he is guilt-ridden that he has cheated the insurance company and is ready to do any activity that will earn him the money to repay the insurance. Here Bahadur steps in, suggests a name and location change & sends him to Nepal. Randhir Kapoor (Anand) is intrigued that random people around Kathmandu recognise him and escort him to a palace. After a few scenes that show the goings-on in the palace it is revealed that the palace is the headquarters for printing fake notes, belongs to Bahadur alias John and Anand has been cleverly sweet-talked into standing-in for the actual John (Premnath – it was the period when he used to play the BADMAN). Additionally, it is also revealed that the ‘dead’ father is a captive in the palace; the fiancée reaches Kathmandu (on duty, being an air-hostess); sees Anand; goes back; reports to the sister and then the whole family comes to help and rescue the father and brother and finish the movie. The songs are spread through the movie with a mandatory dance with the villain – Premnath is made to sing and dance.

Remembering Premnath today on his birth anniversary, he would have been 92. He was already the cute roly-poly fisherman – Braganza (‘Bobby’, 1973)- when I first became aware of the actor. And through the 70s he was Rai Saab Bhupendra Singh (‘Johnny Mera Naam’, 1970) Khan Badshah (‘Shor’, 1972), Dharmdas ‘Dharmatma‘ (‘Dharmatma’, 1975), IG Khanna (‘Kalicharan’, 1976), Sir Juda (‘Karz’, 1980) etc. I don’t remember having seen any of his movies where he had played a hero. I remember my father was a fan of the songs pictured on him in Raj Kapoor’s ‘Barsaat’ (1949) – “Patli Kamar Hai Tirchhi Nazar Hai“; “Main Gareebon Ka Dil Hoon Watan Ki Zabaan” from ‘Aab-e-Hayaat’ (1955) and “Main Raahi Bhatakne Waala Hoon” from ‘Baadal’ (1951). I recently discovered Vodafone Play – an app offered by Vodafone – which has a section dedicated to old movies, and I discovered ‘Saaqi’ (1952) – an interesting Arabian Nights type fantasy film where he co-starred with Madhubala.

Today’s song has Premnath sharing screen space with Randhir Kapoor (his nephew – ‘bhaanja’, in real life) and Neetu Singh, and shaking a leg outside the Kathmandu temple. I think this was a popular song in the past. Amit Kumar is the playback for Premnath.

Blog Day : 3701 Post No. : 14623

Hullo to all in Atuldom

The song with this post is the perfect candidate for the “how did I forget to post this song earlier?” category.

As of today (at the time of writing this) the blog is 3699 days young and 14618 posts strong. And we still keep finding songs popular during their time and afterwards too and say with surprise – Yeh gaana baaki hai? But then in the ocean of Bollywood songs & movies there are close to 1000 movies released each year with an average of about 4-5 songs in each of them. And in the 105-year history of Indian movies (all languages put together) Bollywood might account for just about 105000 and at the average of 4-5 songs per film we are seeing an ocean of 52500 songs only. All figures are approximate, not accurate at all. Given the kind of selection we have at our disposal there are bound to be songs which we would have previously thought that it is already present on the blog. So as has been said in many posts before this we are still at the bottom of the barrel that we need to fill or our bucket is still in the top rung of an ever-overflowing bottomless- well. So that should explain why this song is making its appearance only now! 🙂

Now, this movie (‘Khel Khel Mein’) had five songs, all fairly popular at that time and two or three of them still rule the air waves across TV and Radio but surprise (seems to be no end to surprises as far as songs of this movie are concerned) I couldn’t find even one out of the five on that years’ Binaca Geetmala list. This was the era when whatever RD Burman composed went straight into the heart and mind of the listener. Whatever Kishore Kumar sang was lapped up by the audience. And young and upcoming actors and strugglers and established stars yearned for this combo to create songs for their movies.

One such actor was Rishi Kapoor. He had made a debut into movies in the year 1970 as an adolescent in love with his teacher in ‘Mera Naam Joker’; not to forget the brief walk in the rain, that he undertook in the company of his older siblings in his father’s ‘Shri 420’ in 1955, when he must have been about 2 years old. His first role as an adult was in the 1973 hit – ‘Bobby’. In that movie where Laxmikant Pyarelal scored music, Shailendra Singh was his playback voice. But subsequent films saw Laxmi-Pyare mostly use Mohd. Rafi for Rishi Kapoor and RD Burman favouring Kishore Kumar. And this association of Kishore Kumar or Mohd Rafi for Rishi went on till the two singers passed away but by then Chintu, as Rishi is addressed fondly, had made a place for himself on the Bollywood firmament.

Now coming to todays’ song, its from a movie which has a story attached to it in my personal life which I have related in a post to another song from this movie – “Hamne Tumko Dekha, Tumne Hum Ko Dekha“. The movie had a thriller or mystery or whodunit kind of story. It featured a set of college students who love to play pranks on unsuspecting people. They play such a prank on a stingy, wealthy jeweller (Jankidas) by sending him a typewritten ransom note. They find from the newspapers the next day that the wealthy Seth has been murdered and they could be the prime suspects as the police find the ransom note on the dead man.  Then the all-fun-n-frolic movie turns into a thriller where one of their fellow students and prankster – Rakesh Roshan – is also murdered followed by his girl friend and bar dancer Aruna Irani. As a child I found the movie gripping and find it cute even now. The movie was directed by Ravi Tandon, Gulshan Bawra was the lyricist and RD Burman the composer. The playback singers for this song are Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle pictured on a drunk couple – Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor.

So, with this song I would like to wish the cutely handsome Rishi Kapoor a very Happy Birthday (4th September). He is only 66 this year and still has looks that make any girl miss a heartbeat. Saw him recently in the company of another of my favourite actor – Amitabh Bachchan- in ‘102 Not Out’ (2018) and fell in love with this actor all over again. Must admit here that I have a weakness for any movie featuring these two together and ‘102 Not Out’ is no exception.

Happy Birthday Chintu ji 😊

dono me shaayad banti na ho
apni tarah in mein chhanti na ho
hum wo karenge dil jo kahe
hamko zamaane se kya
arre dhat
khullam khulla pyar karenge hum dono
iss duniya se nahi darenge hum dono

ae

sabko milta nahi ye khazaana
ae
bolo na
pyar ka hai ye dushman zamaana
arrey sun

sabko milta nahi ye khazaana
jinko aji ye khazaana mile
dekh dekh unko ye duniya jale
hum wo karenge dil jo kahe
hamko zamaane se kya
