This is an absolutely wonderful evergreen song sung by Umadevi.
This song was picturised on an actress called Munawwar Sultana. The actress as well as the singer are no more around, but this song has easily become immortal.
But despite such a hugely popular song, Umadevi found herself out of a job. The reason was, she was under contract to sing only for A R Kardar movies. Defying this contract, she sang for a non Kardar movie called “Chandralekha” and as a result, Kardar dropped her as a singer from his productions.
Forced to try something else for a living, she began acting at the advice of Naushad and the first movie she acted in was “Babul”. That revived her fortunes in the film industry- as an actress, if not as a singer. And as an actress, she was called Tuntun. This name too was suggested by Naushad.
But everyone will admit that with the passage of time, Umadevi ( Tuntun) will still be remembered thanks to this immortal song that she sang in “Dard”.

Yes, every time someone mentions Tuntun, I am reminded of this song. This song was a regular in Radio Ceylon’s “purani filmon ke geet” between 7:30 to 8 AM, and it was one “purana geet” that I liked even as a kid.

I can vouch for the fact that this used to be a much loved and much hummed song in 1970s. I am sure it was even more popular when this song was first released.

Just reminds me of Uma Devi who sang the song but unfortunately was not very successful. Her other song i like is from “Natak” Dil wale Jal jal hi marjana tum preet na kar pachtana.
I wish she had sung more songs.

I have heard this song several times and I saw Tuntun in the film
Babul and several other films. Everything appears in mind when I hear this song or her acting in the films. Memory of any things / happenings so comes always delights the mind. Tuntun was a nice one. She is remembered.

One correction I would like to make to the lyrics:
‘lekin naseeb layi hoon EK TOH GAVAR ka’.
Please let me know if anybody thinks differently.

The word is “sogawaar”, meaning “a grieving or melancholy person”

Well, Every time Tuntun is mentioned I just think of this song. I was watching a clip recently which featured Tuntun and I thought I would put in a farmaish, but then it slipped my mind for the last few days. But you have done it anyway 🙂 Thanks!
Its a really nice old fashioned and simple song, sung beautifully by Uma Devi. Shame she did not sing too many songs.
