Thandi hawaaon ne gori ka ghoonghat utha diya

Posted on: October 22, 2008

In 1970s, Rajesh Khanna was the reigning male superstar whereas Hema Malini was the dream girl. But the two hardly paired with each other. Rajesh Khanna was mainly paired with Mumtaz and Sharmila Tagore, whereas the pairing of Dharmendra and Hema Malini was taken for granted those days.

One South Indian production house ( one that also used to publish Chandamama magazine) decided to pair Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini, and the result was this movie called “Prem Nagar”. I was aware that this movie had some sad songs of note, but I did not have much idea about this movie.

There was this song ” thandi hawaaon ne gori ka ghoonghat utha diya” which was played a lot on Radio Ceylon those days, but I was not aware which movie this song was from. Now that I decided to include this song in my blog, I researched this song and found that this song was from “Prem Nagar”. Wow! I never knew that all these years.

The situation is this:- Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini go to some remote tribal area, and it is night now. According to Bollywood rules, if Hero and Heroine go to a remote place, then it calls for a song and dance involving the residents of the said place. So, in compliance with this rule, a song and dance sequence ensues.

The native women in this song dressed skimpily which included half sari, skirt style, and matching coloured choli. The menfolk wore a dhoti on their waists and a bird feather on their heads. Dress designer of this movie must have seen a few Hollywood movies where Red Indians are shown wearing bird feathers on their head, so he must have adopted the same model dress code for this desi song as well.

First para has the hero and heroine singing and the natives dancing, but in the second para, heroine also joins in, as does the rain, making this a rain song as well.

The music of this song reminds me so much of the music of “Barsaar ki ek raat”, but let me clarify that this movie came one decade prior to “Barsaat ki ek raat”, and moreover, Burmans were the music directors in both the movies, and that explains the resemblance in tune.

The song itself is tailormade for dancing. This much I could deduce just by listening to the song. When I watched the picturisation, my deduction was confirmed.

So here is a wonderful timepass song from a 1974 movie caled “Prem Nagar”. Those were the days ! And we had such wonderful music to listen to those days !

Song- Thandi hawaaon ne gori ka ghoonghat utha diya (Prem Nagar) ( 1974) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

hurray ho hurray ho
hurray ho hurray ho
Damwa baru re
aayo re
hurray ho hurray ho
hurray ho hurray ho
he Thandi hawaaon ne gori ka ghoonghat utha diya
he kaali ghataaon ne sajan ko natkhat bana diya
he Thandi hawaaon ne gori ka ghoonghat utha diya
he kaali ghataaon ne sajan ko natkhat bana diya
nagar nagar dagar dagar panghat bana diya
gori ka ghoonghat utha diya
he Thandi hawaaon ne gori ka ghoonghat utha diya

hurray ho hurray ho
hurray ho hurray ho
ho Barkha bahaar barkhaa bahaar
barkhaa bahaar aayi barkha bahaar
jaane kis girdhar ne likkhi koi chiiti piya ke des mein
aayi purwaayi leke pardesi preetam ka sandesh re
baadal ne baadal ne
baadal ne usko kaajal laga diya
gori ka ghoonghat utha diya
damwa baru ru he
aayo re

rimjhim phuhar rimjhim phuhaar
rimjhim phuraar pade rimjhim phuhaar
teri nazar sabpe tujhe sabki khabar
par ye pata hai ke nahin
maine jo saawan se kaha
chupke se wo tune suna hai ke nahin
saawan se saawan se
saawan se pahle man ne bata diya
saajan ko natkhat banaa diya

main baawri main baawri
main baawri huyi main baawri
ui dar gayi bijli se tujhe choo liya maine
ye badi bhool huyi
ek hi din ek hi pal ek hi jhonke me
kali phool huyi
shabnam ko shabnam ko
shabnam ko dhoop ne
shola bana diya
saajan ko natkhat bana diya
nagar nagar dagar dagar panghat bana diya
gori ka ghoonghat utha diya
sajan ko natkhat bana diya
gori ka ghooghat utha diya
sajan ko natkhat bana diya
gori ka ghooghat utha diya
sajan ko natkhat bana diya
gori ka ghooghat utha diya
sajan ko natkhat bana diya
gori ka ghooghat utha diya

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this song and watching the video.
Rajesh songs are usually good anyway. And Hema of the 1970s is watchable in any movie for just her. 🙂

As I mentioned, I was not aware that this light hearted song belonged to this movie.

Love this song. You’re right about it’s feel–I think hills, Shakti Samanta, etc. sort of like in Kaka, Hema and Shakti’s Mehbooba with RD. There was a scene there with Kaka listening to snatches of a ‘tribal’ song except if you listen closely it sounds like it is Nepali. The ‘tribals’ of course are not remotely Nepali 🙂

In most Bollywood movies, “tribals” speak some unique brand of Bhojpuri.
