Maar diya jaaye ki chhod diya jaaye

on:“Mera gaon Mera Desh” was the most well known “daaku” movie before “Sholay” came about. In fact, “Sholay” is inspired in parts by “Mera Gaon Mera Desh”.
For instance, the dashing Daaku of “Mera Gaon Mera Desh”, viz. Vinod Khanna is called Gajjar Singh, as against the Gabbar Singh of Sholay. This movie too has a Thakur who hires a reformed baddie viz Dharmendra to get even with Gajjar Singh. Dharmendra who gets tied up in Gabbar Singh’s den in “Sholay” suffers a similar fate in “Mera Gaon Mera Desh” too. Like “Sholay”,this scene leads to a popular song in this movie as well.
The music of “Mera Gaon Mera Desh” is quite outstanding and most songs from this movie went on to become very popular. This particular song “mar diya jaaye ki chhod diya jaaye” had in fact acquired a cult status in those days.
The words of this song were inspired by the historical dialogue between King Puru and Alexander the great, where Alexander the great is supposed to have asked this question to Puru- ” Tell me how do I treat you”. And Puru had replied- ” Like how a King treats another King”.
I have no idea what was the language of conversation between the two legendary figures of history, but that historical dialogue has certainly inspired this Hindi Bollywood song. Anand Bakshi admitted that the historical dialogue mentioned earlier was the inspiration behind this song.
It is good that someone did not think of making a bollywood movie on Alexander the great. who knows, the movie maker may actually show Alexander singing this song, with Puru ( played by Dharmendra) tied up, like always.
Listen to this song. This song is quite a wonderful song full of verve and energy, that is sure to perk you up and energise you.
Song- Maar diya jaaye ki chhod diya jaaye (Mera Gaon Mera Desh) (1971) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
Maar diya jaaye ki chhod diya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
Maar diya jaaye ke chhod diya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
jaam diya jaaye ke zahar diya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
Kaanch ki choodiyan bhi maine khankaayin
apni zulfein bhi maine to bikhraayin
Kaanch ki choodiyan bhi maine khankaayin
apni zulfein bhi maine to bikhraayin
tujhko zanjeerein haan
zanjeeren tujhko haan haan
tujhko zanjeerein lekin pasand aayi
Qaid kiya jaaye ki chhod diya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
Aa rahi hai hansi teri kahani pe
aa raha hai taras teri jawani pe
Aa rahi hai hansi teri kahani pe
aa raha hai taras teri jawani pe
aaj tu hai meri
tu hai tu hai meri
aaj tu hai meri meharbaani pe
tod diya jaaye ki dil jod diya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
Ek bujhti huyi shama ke parwaane
aakhri aarzoo kya hai mastaane
Ek bujhti huyi shama ke parwaane
aakhri aarzoo kya hai mastaane
aaj tera girebaan
tera tera girebaan
aaj tera girebaan O deewane
chaak kiya jaaye ki chhod diya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
maar diya jaye ki chhod diya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye
bol tere saath kya sulook kiya jaaye

It used to be very popular song for dances on social gathering among young girls back then.Great song but I must say Asha Parekh looks a bit strange in the song. Main character is the dancer song is picturused on.Is that Laxmi Chhaya?

I have also read about the inspiration behind the lyrics being the Sikandar-Porus dialogue.

Hindi cinema’s been there, done that 🙂 It’s “Sikandar” (1941) with Prithviraj Kapoor as Alexander and Sohrab Modi as Porus. Dunno about the song though 😀
