Ye reshmi zulfein ye sharbati aankhen

Posted on: November 2, 2008

“Do Raaste” was one of the earlier hits of Rajesh Khanna. This movie, like most hits of Rajesh Khanna, had many hit songs. In fact, I am coming round to the view that many movies of those days became hits thanks to their music and the credit went to the Hero, often undeservedly. There are people who think that Rajendra Kumar movies were hits thanks to the music of his movies, and not because of his tragic roles.

Coming to this movie, which was one of the stepping stones towards superstardom for Rajesh Khanna, music definitely made a sizeable contribution in the success of this movie. And just look at the songs. They are popular even today. I have posted a song from this movie earlier (“Bindiya chamkegi”), and there are more songs from this movie that are yet to be posted.

Here is another evergreen iconic song from this movie. The phrase “ye reshmi zulfein” became a very popular phrase with budding “shayars”, wanna be “aashiques” etc, after this song was released.

Song-Ye reshi zulfein ye sharbati aankhen (Do Raaste) (1969) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD- Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

ye reshmi zulfen,
ye sharbati aankhen
inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi
inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi
ye reshmi zulfen,
ye sharbati aankhen
inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi
inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi

jo ye aankhen sharam se jhuk jaayengi
jo ye aankhen sharam se jhuk jaayengi
saari baaten yahin bas ruk jaayengi
chup rahnaa ye afsaanaa
koi inko naa batlaanaa
ke inhen dekh kar pee rahe hain sabhi
inhen dekh kar pee rahe hain sabhi
ye reshmi zulfen
ye sharbati aankhen
inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi
inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi

zulfen magroor itni ho jaayengi
zulfen magaroor itni ho jaayengi
dil to tadpaayengi
jee ko tarsaayengi
ye kar dengi deewaana
koi inko naa batlaanaa
ke inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi
inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi
ye reshmi zulfen
ye sharbati aankhen
inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi
inhen dekh kar jee rahe hain sabhi

Wah, wah…another of my favourite songs.
It was pretty popular at that time.

I remember even roadside Romeos would sing it. 🙂
Lovely song. And Rafi’s voice…I am not going to repeat myself. 🙂

Rajesh Khanna paid a lot of attention to the music of his films…so I think he does deserve SOME credit 🙂 but he couldn’t have done it without the music directors, singers and lyricists for sure!

The fact that the best of music directors, lyricists and singers were around to work in his movies was a big help, undoubtedly.

In the third stanza of the song,

what is the meaning of the expression, “चाक गिराना” as in…:
“ये क्या जादू है जाने? फिर चाक गिरेवा दीवाने, इन्हें देख कर सी रहे हैं सभी!”
??

The song does not have the line mentioned by you. The lyrics mentioned by you for this song is noted down by someone who has misheard the song. The lines quoted by you does not mean anything.

The 3rd stanza (अन्तरा) is:

My primary school classmate, Ashok Khosla who is now an accomplished ग़ज़ल singer, gave me this information.

Please update the song with the 3rd stanza.

I found this video. And like Mr Ram Rao I have the same question, please Mr. Atul. What do the lines mean?? Of the last stanza>

Third stanza in the full audio link is :

Saare in ki shikaayat karte hain
Saare in ki shikaayat karte hain
phir bhi in se muhobbat karte hain
ye kya jaadoo hai jaane
phir chaak girebaan deewaane
inhen dekh kar si rahe hain sabhi

Last three lines are causing confusion, i think. Let me try to make sense of this.

Chaak girebaan is ” torn clothes”.

‘Chaak girebaan’ is also a metaphor for what is openly described in these lines of a song in “Laawaris” :

‘dil cheer ke dikhlaa doon main
dil mein yahi soorat basi’

Last line “inhen dekh kar si rahen hain sabhi” is simply that, in deference of the sensibility of the beauties they are faced with, ‘deewane’ are trying to tone down the rhetoric of ‘dil cheer ke dikhlaa…. ” etc . etc.

‘si’ means stitch up.

Translation of the whole stanza :

In spite having complaints and grievances of being haughty and or being introverts, the deewana still loves the beauty. And see the miracle of “deewane” wanting to bare their hearts, but sealing their lips(not openly expressing) in deference of the dignity(or sensibilities) of the beauty.

Thank you so much for the meaning and translation, Mrs. Nahm. I get the gist of it 🙂
