Chaahe raho door chaahe raho paas

1972 was the year when many Bollywood movie makers decided to hitch the bandwagon turned Juggernaut of Kishore Kumar- RD Burman combination. And the result were some movies that had music by R D Burman and songs by Kishore, but the movies themselves were no great shakes.
Take this movie called “Do Chor”. To this date I have no idea what was the story line of this movie and who all acted in it. I only vaguely recall that Tanuja ( fresh from the success of “haathi mere saathi” ) was there in this movie. I guessed that it was a lighthearted movie. There were many such light hearted movies coming along those days, mostly with Dharmendra- Hema Malini or Rajesh Khanna- Mumtaz in the lread roles.
But despite my vague recollections I recall that the music of this movie was nice to listen to. May be my impressionable age was responsible for it, but even today, 36 years later, I find the songs from this movie nice to listen to. Just listen to this song ” chahe raho door chahe raho pass” and decide whether I am right in liking this song.
Song- Chahe raho door chahe raho paas ( Do Chor) (1972) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Lata, Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD- R D Burman
Lyrics
chaahe raho door chaahe raho paas
sun lo magar ek baat
ek dor se bandhogi sanam kisi din hamaare saath
chaahe raho door chaahe raho paas
sun lo magar ek baat
tum is gali to main us gali ke aaun kabhi na haath
chaahe raho door chaahe raho paas
mere peechhe-peechhe chale to ho baabu
par zaraa tirchhi hai chaal
aashiq bananaa jaao kahin seekho tum abhi do-chaar saal
chaahat ke qaabil ban jaao phir main karungi
phir main karungi baat
chaahe raho door chaahe raho paas
sun lo magar ek baat
tum is gali to main us gali ke aaun kabhi na haath
chaahe raho door chaahe raho paas
o meri chanchal pawan basanti karo nahin yoon beqaraar
in baanhon mein aanaa hai tumko aakhir jaan-e-bahaar
dil thaame aaogi phir main poochhungaa tumse
poochhungaa tumse baat
chaahe raho door chaahe raho paas
sun lo magar ek baat
ek dor se bandhogi sanam kisi din hamaare saath
chaahe raho door chaahe raho paas
sun lo magar ek baat
tum is gali to main us gali ke aaun kabhi na haath
chaahe raho door chaahe raho paas

Atul, you sure are right. I so vividly remember listening to this song played in Chitrahar or Rangoli. It feels like going back in time. I just cannot thank you enough for what you are doing.

Timepass film, with Tanuja playing the chor and the whole city is in a tizzy. This song is my favourite song from the movie and the situation before it begins is quite enjoyable – Dharmendra cribbing about how tough it is being a model and Tanuja being remorselessly professional.

You are very right, Atulji. 1972 did bring in a lot of RDB-Kishore songs. As for Do Chor, I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. Especially the part where Tanuja has a double role. Dharam was not to be left behind and the scene where he gets to know the truth is so awesome.
As the title suggest, they both are thieves in the movie. I think Dharam knew that he may not have a long run in the market if he kept doing ‘Satyakaam’ kind of roles. So, he would do these kinds of movies too. In 1971, he had “Naya Zamana” and “Mera gaon Mera Desh”. In 1972, he had “Samadhi” and “Do Chor”, “Seeta Aur Geeta”. In 1973, he had so many movies. So maybe that was what worked in his favour.
Tanuja is a delight to watch in this movie.
