In olden days, when one listened to songs on Radio, the listeners would need to have all the knowledge about a song, in case they wanted to send their farmaish for a song.
The farmaish senders, therefore would often have good knowledge about music directors, lyricists as well as singers.
Another important person for radio listeners was the announcer who played their farmaishes. As far as farmaish senders were concerned announcers like Ameen Sayani,Manohar Mahajan, Shiv Kumar Saroj, VijayLaxmi etc were as much of household names as the singers and music directors whose songs they played in their programmes.
We know that Ameen Sayani actually played a few roles in Bollywood movies. But what about other Radio Ceylon announcers ? Well, one of the earliest Radio Ceylon annoucer was called Balraj Dutt, who went on to become a big Bollywood actor by the name Sunil Dutt.
In 1970s, Shiv Kumar Saroj, one of the Radio Ceylon announcers , tried his hand as a lyricist, and he came up with this song “Pyaar maanga hai tumhi se, na inkaar karo”. This was a fairly well known song in late 1970s. It was sung by Kishore Kumar under the music direction of Bappi Lahiri and was picturised on Sachin in a movie called “College girl”.
In this song, Sachin is shown singing this song in a TV. Though those were the days when only B & W TV transmission was possible in India, this transmission is miraculously in colour. This is Bollywood’s version of taking poetic license, I suppose.
