tan man dhan sab hai tera

Posted on: November 26, 2008

“Tan man dhan sab hai tera” was a song that I heard many a times in 1970s, without getting to know any details about this song. I could make out that the singer was Mukesh, but that is all I knew about this song.

I rediscovered this song again recently, and this time I found out that the song was from “Manchali”. Manchali was a movie whose theme song cum title song “O manchali kahan chali” is a song that I recall hearing in Binaca geetmala weekly programes quite frequently.

Now that I have rediscovered the song again, and I have watched its video too, how do I classify this song ? This purports to be a bhajan, and indeed Sanjiv Kumar poses like he is singing this as a bhajan with great devotion and her parents are suitably impressed. But the youngsters and the servant, as well as Leena Chandawarkar know fully well that Sanjeev Kumar is addressing this bhajan not to Lord Krishna but to Leena Chandawarkar.

Sanjeev Kumar excels as a multitasker in this song. He poses as a devout bhajan singer as long as the parents of Leena Chandawarkar are watching, and makes passes on Leena when the parents are not looking, much to the amusement of the youngsters in the family who are very much in the know. Leena Chandawarkar is not amused, of course, when Sanjeev Kumar flirts with her right under the noses of her parents, while pretending to sing this bhajan.

It is a must watch video for the fantastic acting of Sanjeev Kumar and for the disapproving looks of Leena Chandawarkar. It is a pure gem, and a different kind of comedy.

Song: Tan man dhan sab hai tera (Manchali) (1973) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics- Anand Bakshi, MD- Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

tan man dhan sab hai tera
bin tere kyaa hai meraa
tan man dhan sab hai tera
bin tere kyaa hai meraa
raat-din main tere geet gaataa rahoon
tan man dhan sab hai tera
bin tere kyaa hai meraa
raat-din main tere geet gaataa rahoon
tan man dhan sab hai tera

kyaa dharti kyaa sooraj-chandaa
kyaa dharti kyaa sooraj-chandaa
jag moh maayaa kaa ek phandaa
main hoon seedhaa-saadaa bandaa
jag choron kaa hai deraa
tan man dhan sab hai tera
bin tere kyaa hai meraa
raat-din main tere geet gaataa rahoon
tan man dhan sab hai tera

kyaa apnaa aur kyaa begaanaa
kyaa apnaa aur kyaa begaanaa
jaan ke kaahe dhokhaa khaanaa
jeewan hai bas aanaa-jaanaa
ek jogi ka hai pheraa
tan man dhan sab hai tera
bin tere kya hai mera
raat din main tere geet gaata rahoon

Such a great film 🙂

I have a request (farmaish): Allah Tero Naam from “Hum Dono”…I think it’s the most beautiful bhajan (would love the translation too if it’s easy).

Sanjeev Kumar was really great actor. If possible please upload two songs from his film

“Anokhi Raat”

1. Ohre Taal Mile Nadi Ke Jal mein
(Song on Youtube is full of interruptions)

2. Dulhan Se Tumhara Milan Hoga

Again your facts are off the track ! It seems that your blog is full of inaccuracies but its your plodding that deserves applause! Nirupa Roy and veteran gujrati actor Chandrakant were not leena chandavarkar’s parents but her chacha and chachi, paternal unce and aunty in the film..
