A few months ago, I had written a detailed post about rail songs where I had posted details about some 20 songs.
I have discovered a few more rail songs since. One was the “Zamaane ko dikhaana hai” song viz “hoga tumse pyaara kaun”. The latest rail song I have come across is this song “mujhe apna yaar banalo” from “Boyfriend” (1961).
I thought that climbing on the roof of a train and singing a song was a recent trend started by Amitabh Bachchan in “Mahaan” (1983), but it turns out that I was wrong. Our redoubtable hero Shammi Kapoor had beaten Amitabh Bachchan to it by more than two decades.
In this song, a steam locomotive driven narrow guage train ( Shimla?) is about to start. Shammi Kapoor materialises out of nowhere, and before one realises it, he has climbed atop the train and is seen moving from one coach to the other, singing “mujhe apna yaar banaa lo”.
What hardships the heroes of yesteryears had to suffer those days, just because the Indian Railway coaches those days were not inter-connected by vestibules !

This is the movie version: the 78rpm version reads: mujhe apna yaar banalo, phir dekho mazaa pyarka. Do you have it?

How many versions this song is having. Apart from the one posted i have found two more. One is party song , with first two stanzas of the version posted, yet different as the lines are repeated in 2nd stanza. Here is the link:

I have heard another version to which Mr. Mistry has referred, ” mujhe apna yaar banaa lo phir dekho mazaa pyaar ka “, which is again different in mood.
Four versions of one song compostion ! This must be a record of sorts.
Ah, what were S-J thinking ? Moreover the music is more like they used for RK films songs.

Lovely !
I saw this movie a few years ago while in India (it was on TV).
Loved this song and other songs of the movie too.
This movie also has a very young Dharmendra.
