Piya piya piya mera jiya pukaare

It is a song that I call as a “Tonga” song, and for good reasons. The music of O P Nayyar very much reminds one of a horse hoofing along merrily drawing the tonga along. And the picturisation actually shows a tonga with Kishore Kumar and Chand Usmani as its passengers.
Like how it happens in Bollywood movies, travelling in a tonga, or in any other means of transport is always a good opportunity of singing a song. And when Kishore Kumar himself is one of the passengers, then the possibilities become even more exciting.
The movie is called “Baap re baap” and the singers are Kishore Kumar for himself) and Asha Bhonsle ( for Chand Usmani). It is such a light hearted song. And this light hearted song is written by Jaan Nissar Akhtar, normally associated with serious songs in public perception.
This is one song where both Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar begin to find their mark.This is one of the first songs where O P Nayyar worked with her and began moulding his voice. As for Kishore Kumar, it is one of the first times that he is heard yodelling in a song.

Yes Vivekji you are absolutely right. I heard the same some years ago in a BBC documentary on Asa Bhonsle . The mistake had to be ratified by rerecording the song but Kishoreda insisted that it should be left as it is and he would take care during the shooting.
What he did was during the song shooting, he put one hand on Chand Usmani’s mouth and kept on miming his own part of the song.

Mid-way in the second antara, Asha starts singing after “wo dekho gori ham-tum chale hain hanste-gaate”, while Kishore repeats the line a second time. Apparently, Asha did sing ‘out of turn’ at the recording studio, and Kishore insisted that the ‘error’ be left untouched as he woud take care of it during the shoot!
