Tu jahaan jahaan chalega
Posted on: December 27, 2008
While posting another Lata song from this movie, I had commented that “Mera Saaya” had as many as four immortal Lata songs. After posting “naino me badra chaaye”, I now post the title song from this movie viz “tu jahan jahan rahega mera saaya saath hoga”.
This song is just as moving, and just as haunting as the earlier song posted. This lends further credence to my earlier assertion that Lata-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan-Madan Mohan combination was a killer combination that has given us some timeless classics.
Giving a few timeless classics over a career should be enough, here they gave us so many timeless classics in one movie itself. Awesome, just awesome !

Song-Tu jahan jahan chalegaa (Mera Saaya) (1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD- Madan Mohan
Lyrics
tuu jahaan jahaan chalegaa, meraa saayaa, saath hogaa
tuu jahaan jahaan chalegaa, meraa saayaa, saath hogaa
meraa saayaa, meraa saayaa
meraa saayaa, meraa saayaa
kabhi mujhko yaad karke, jo bahenge tere aansoo
kabhi mujhko yaad karke, jo bahenge tere aansoo
to wahin pe rok lenge, unhen aake mere aansoo
tu jidhar kaa rukh karegaa, meraa saayaa, saath hogaa
tuu jahaan jahaan chalegaa, meraa saayaa, saath hogaa
meraa saayaa, meraa saayaa
meraa saayaa, meraa saayaa …
tuu agar udaas hogaa, to udaas hoongi main bhi
tuu agar udaas hogaa, to udaas hoongi main bhi
nazar aaun yaa naa aaun, tere paas hoongi main bhi
tu kahin bhi jaa rahegaa, meraa saayaa, saath hogaa
tuu jahaan jahaan chalegaa, meraa saayaa, saath hogaa
meraa saayaa, meraa saayaa
meraa saayaa, meraa saayaa …
wo bhooli daastaan lo phir yaadaa gayi

I wanted to relate this episode about Tu Jahan Jahan Chalega that I had come across on the web a month or so ago: the Afghan classical singer Ustad Sarahang who was trained in Patiyala recorded a classical work called Pai Ashk in Nand or Nand Kalyan raga; Madan Mohan asked his permission to use the melody for Tu Jahan Jahan Chalega and received it. Here is a link to the Afghan recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjKOzTtr-mM&feature=related
The Afghan and the Hindi treatments are different, but it is interesting how different cultures share common artistic bonds.
By the way, the song from Baap Bete (1959) I am requesting is Dil unko uthake… I would appreciate it if you can locate a video of it.

Madan Mohan was truly a master of ghazals. Every tune of his has become a classic, no matter what the movie was. I watched a show in which Lataji said that MM was the master of ghazals and this is so true.
Incidentally, I think that Sunil Dutt is imagining Sadhna singing the song, she is probably dead and this is her saaya singing the song when he is depressed after her death. I say this because I saw this song performed once on stage and it was sung by someone acting as a ghost. If so, this is probably in the haunting category, both in the sense of a ghost haunting, and the fact that the melody is truly a haunting melody!

I just watched the video closely instead of listening and realized the song was coming from the radio! It still sounds like a “haunting” song to me!

Lalitha: I happened to watch the movie on a dvd a week ago which had the song in two versions. In one version, he recalls her singing the song at a party while he plays the piano. In the other version, he actually hears the song Woh Bhuli Dastan on the radio but imagines it to be be transformed into Tu Jahan Jahan Chalega. In that sense it has the haunting feeling. This is not a ghost movie, but it has an intriguing twist provided that you are willing to suspend your logic for a while; Perhaps the other Madan Mohan classic Woh Kaun Thi is a ghost story.

Thank you for posting these great songs by Madan Mohan as well as other great music directors. Your have the ability to point out in just a few words the defining qualities of a song. You correctly observe here that “Giving a few timeless classics over a career should be enough, here they gave us so many timeless classics in one movie itself.”
As they might say, let the good tunes roll.
May I request you to post two songs from Baap Bete: Un Ko Utha Ke Dil Diya and More Payal Geet Sunaye?
