Jo unki tamanna hai barbaad hoja

Posted on: January 4, 2009

This particular song is one that is a much liked song, but I doubt if too many people would be able to explain why they like this song. True, Rafi’s voice is as divine as ever, and Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music is always great, but how many of them are able to understand the lyrics ? Personally, I have little idea what the lyrics mean.

Lack of understanding the lyrics has never stopped me from enjoying a song. And the words sound like they mean something profound and philosophical. In any case, I have very high regards for Rajinder Krishan’s class as a lyricist. In fact, being able to write lyrics that people can enjoy without understanding them is a great skill, which is given to only a few talented people ( viz. lyricists and painters).

The picturisation shows a drunk Sanjay Khan singing this song in a bar. Those who follow cricket may notice a striking resemblance between Sanjay Khan and the present day cricketer Rahul Dravid. Considering how Dravid’s batting form is these days, and how fans are baying after his blood, this song could well be written for Dravid. In fact, when I watch this song, I imagine that it is Dravid singing this song. 😉

Song-Jo unki tamanna hai (Inteqam) (1969) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

jo unki tamannaa hai, barbaad ho jaa
jo unki tamannaa hai, barbaad ho jaa
to ai dil muhabbat ki kismat banaa de
tadap aur tadap kar abhi jaan de de
yoon marte hain mar jaane waale, dikhaa de
jo un ki tamannaa hai, barbaad ho jaa …

na un kaa tabassum, tere waaste hai
na un kaa tabassum, tere waaste hai
na tere liye un ki zulfon ke saaye
tu be aas phir kyon jiye jaa rahaa hai
tu be aas phir kyon jiye jaa rahaa hai
jawaani mein ye zindgaani lutaa de
jo un ki tamannaa hai, barbaad ho jaa …

sitam yaa karam husn waalon ki marzi
sitam yaa karam husn waalon ki marzi
yahi soch kar koyi shikwaa na karnaa
sitamagar salaamat rahe husn teraa
sitamagar salaamat rahe husn teraa
yahi us ko mitne se pahle duaa de
jo un ki tamannaa hai, barbaad ho jaa
to ai dil muhabbat ki kismat banaa de
tadap aur tadap kar abhi jaan de de
yoon marte hain mar jaane waale, dikhaa de
jo un ki tamannaa hai, barbaad ho jaa

Another typical Atul intro. 🙂
Indeed, now that you mention it, there are signs of Dravid in that video. Esp around 2:30, where Sanjay struggles a bit while walking, reminds me of Dravid.

I love this song. Rafi’s voice is sublime.
And about the lyrics – they are not so complicated ?

It is all about sitam, sitamgar and tamanna. 🙂

Saw this movie a couple of years ago.
Decent story-line. Pretty good songs too.
