O mere sona re sona re sona re
Posted on: January 15, 2009
“Teesri Manzil” was the movie with which R D Burman announced his arrival as a music director. And what songs this movie had !
I have already posted a couple of songs from this movie. Now here is a song that was sung mainly by Asha Bhonsle ( for all but last para where Rafi makes a cameo appearance), unlike the earlier songs one of which was a Rafi solo and the other was a duet sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle.
This Asha Bhonsle song demonstrated that she had reinvented herself as a singer and had taken her singing to a new plane.
The song was picturised on another Asha( our beloved Asha Parekh) and Shammi Kapoor.

Song-O mere sona re sona re sona re (Teesri Manzil) (1966) Singer-Asha Bhonsle,Rafi,Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD- R D Burman
Lyrics
o mere sonaa re sonaa re sonaa re
de dungi jaan judaa mat honaa re
maine tujhe zaraa der mein jaanaa
huaa kusuur khafaa mat honaa re
maine tujhe zaraa der mein jaanaa
huaa kusoor khafaa mat honaa re
o mere sonaa re sonaa re sonaa
o meri baanhon se nikalke
tu agar mere raste se hat jaayegaa
to lahraake, ho balkhaake
meraa saayaa tere tan se lipat jaayegaa
tum chhudaao laakh daaman
chhodte hain kab ye armaan
ke main bhi saath rahungi rahoge jahaan
o mere sonaa re sonaa re sonaa re
de dungi jaan judaa mat honaa re
maine tujhe zaraa der mein jaanaa
huaa kusoor khafaa mat honaa re
o mere sonaa re sonaa re sonaa
o miyaan hamse na chhipaao
wo banaawat ki saari adaayen liye
ki tum ispe ho itraate
ki main peechhe hoon sau iltizaayen liye
jee main khush hoon mere sonaa
jhooth hai kyaa, sach kaho naa
ke main bhi saath rahoongi rahoge jahaan
o mere sonaa re sonaa re sonaa re
de dungi jaan judaa mat honaa re
maine tujhe zaraa der mein jaanaa
huaa kusoor khafaa mat honaa re
o mere sonaa re sonaa re sonaa
o phir hamse na ulajhnaa
nahin lat aur uljhan mein pad jaayegi
o pachhtaaogi kuchh aise
ki ye surkhi labon ki utar jaayegi
ye sazaa tum bhool na jaanaa
pyaar ko thokar mat lagaanaa
ke chalaa jaaungaa phir main na jaane kahaan
o mere sonaa re sonaa re sonaa re
de dungi jaan judaa mat honaa re
maine tujhe zaraa der mein jaanaa
huaa kusoor khafaa mat honaa re
maine tujhe zaraa der mein jaanaa
huaa kusoor khafaa mat honaa re …

Memsaab, I know why they make fun of her. That’s because of her world famous dialog. Imagine a stormy chilly night, temple bells are ringing because of the heavy winds, Asha Parekh walks in and you can only see her from the back… her dialog: “bhagwaan, main tere paas bahot badi aas le ke aayi hoon” (Translation: God, I’ve come to you with very big hope or rather rear?) 😉
Atul, this is one of my favorite songs where Asha sings for Asha. Awesome movie as well!!
ps. I heart Asha Parekh and her pretty eyes.

Asha P is beloved by me too!!! So many people make fun of her, but I don’t understand why…I adore her.
