How does one start liking a song? Does one start liking a song immediately the very first time one listens to it, or does the song grow on the listener ?
And more importantly, how did one start liking this particulal song “Andaaz mera mastaana” from “Dil Apna Aur Preet paraayi” ? I am sure that Raja, the farmaish sender for this song may not recall when he listened to this song for the first time, but I am pretty sure about myself. I heard this song just now for the first time. I have so far heard and watched the song twice, and I have so far liked the song. If I am like others, then by the time I hear this song a few more times, this song may become a favourite song of mine.
Yes, those who do not remember how they began liking an old song can hire my services to find out how it must have happened. As it is, there are quite a few old songs that I have been discovering only now. And it has been a great experience.
This is s stage song, where Meena Kumar and four other ladies sing this song (and dance) on stage. Raj Kumar is also on stage and unlike the ladies, he barely exerts himself. I have no idea why he was there on the stage. May be those who have watched this movie can enlighten me.
The song is sung by Lata. Shailendra is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan are the music directors.
It is such a long song consisting of nine paras, though to be honest, one para has been repeated six times. In reality there are just 13 lines in this song, out of which 4 lines are repeated six times each.

Super cool! My fav song 😀 there is something about this song that hit me when I was a kid back in the early 80s some time. It was the first time I happened to discover my uncle’s cassette player and listened to his favorite songs on there, this album and song being one on the tapes. Also remember “main tum se pyaar kar loongi” of Nargis. I thought they were talking about the garment men wear which is called “lungi” 😉 hahaha fun times!
Thank you for this song, Atul. Btw, I have never watched this film, just listened to the songs as a kid. I think the tempo and beats and lively music made this one my favorite.

You are so young, Atul! I heard this song when I was young, in fact, my mother and aunt saw this movie (we were considered too young for this movie!) and they told us this story and we knew all the songs, even if I myself saw this movie only in the last four or five years, but I knew this song as a little girl! Of course, now I have no idea why my mother and aunt raved about this movie, since the story is pretty routine – nurse falls for doctor, doctor marries someone else, nurse is heart broken, doctor’s wife doesn’t understand him, she doesn’t like the nurse either, so nurse leaves and so on.
All the songs in this movie were great, though. Raaj kumar was always wooden, both in his expressions and his movements, so this is no surprise. Thanks for this song. I always used to think that strange word was “taahaninaa”! Never mind, the song is still great.

And i thought the word is ‘takhaleena’. We thought it could have a related meaning of “Takhliyaa”. When the King wants to dismiss his companions or the members of the court, he says ‘takhliya’. In effect it would mean “Leave me/us alone”.
I have seen this film on T. V. long back. It ended with Nadira driving the car, with meena Kumari as a passenger, off a cliff and in the sea. Raaj Kumar, Jumps in the sea and conveneintly manages to rescue Meena Kumari.
