Tumne mujhe dekha

Posted on: January 22, 2009

What can one say about the music of “Teesri Manzil” that has not been said ? It was the launch pad of R D Burman as a formidable music director in Bollywood music industry. The songs, all of them, broke new ground. Rafi and Asha Bhonsle were magical in this movie. Majrooh Sultanpuri came up ith some wonderful lyrics.

In summary, “Teesri Manzil” was a musical blockbuster. pure and simple !

Here is another fantastic song from the movie, which was sung by Rafi. Rafi has sung this song with the same energy and verve with which he had sung so many other Shammi Kapoor songs. And like all other Rafi songs sung for Shammi Kapoor, this song has become very much a timeless classic.

Song-Tumne mujhe dekha hokar meharbaan (Teesri Manzil) (1966) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

tum ne mujhe dekhaa, ho kar meharbaan
ruk gayi ye zameen, tham gaya aasmaan
jaan-e-man jaan-e-jaan
tum ne mujhe dekhaa, ho kar meharbaan
ruk gayi ye zameen, tham gaya aasmaan
jaan-e-man jaan-e-jaan
tum ne mujhe dekhaa

o kahin dard ke sahraa mein, rukte chalte hote
in honthon ki hasrat mein, tapte jalte hote
meharbaan ho gayi, zulf ki badliyaan
jaan-e-man, jaan-e-jaan
tum ne mujhe dekhaa hokar meharbaan
ruk gayi ye zameen tham gaya aasmaan
jaan-e-man, jaan-e-jaan
tum ne mujhe dekhaa …

o, lekar ye haseen jalwe, tum bhi na kahaan pahunche
aakhir ko mere dil tak, kadmon ke nishaan pahunche
khatam se ho gaye raaste sab yahaan
jaan-e-man, jaan-e-jaan
tum ne mujhe dekhaa, ho kar meharbaan
ruk gayi ye zameen, tham gaya aasmaan
jaan-e-man jaan-e-jaan
tum ne mujhe dekhaa

Translation (Provided by Raja)

You have been kind enough to look at me
The earth has stopped moving, the sky is silent
O my dear, O my dear
You have been kind enough to look at me
The earth has stopped moving, the sky is silent
O my dear, O my dear
You have been kind enough to look at me

O, somewhere in the procession of pain,
I would have been trudging along
In the hope and desire for these lips
I would have been quivering and burning
But your tresses (symbolic : glances) have become kind towards me
O my dear, O my dear
You have been kind enough to look at me
The earth has stopped moving, the sky is silent
O my dear, O my dear
You have been kind enough to look at me
The earth has stopped moving, the sky is silent
O my dear, O my dear
You have been kind enough to look at me

O, with this beauty and grace, you have gone far
Finally your footsteps found their way only to my heart
It is like all roads have now reached their end
O my dear, O my dear
You have been kind enough to look at me
The earth has stopped moving, the sky is silent
O my dear, O my dear
You have been kind enough to look at me
The earth has stopped moving, the sky is silent
O my dear, O my dear
You have been kind enough to look at me

Very nice song.
This was the song that Shammi Kapoor came back to shoot for the first time after his wife (Geeta Bali)’s death.
He was totally shattered and had taken a distance from everything in life. When he got back to acting, this was the song he had to shoot first.

What a man of steel he must be to do such a great job after such a personal deep tragedy!

Thanks for this little tidbit about this song. Indeed, it is not at all easy to sing a song like this after a personal tragedy of that magnitude.

I Love this song……. Rafi sang this very romantically……..
The feel and expressions came out very naturallly…….

That is why i found that this song was sung from the heart by Rafi and by Shammi kapoor on screen. No wonder it is one of the best ever song picturized in bollywood.
