I had once wondered what I would do if I run out of all Rafi-Shammi songs. Then I realised that I need not worry. In case I have no more Rafi-Shammi songs to listen to, I always had the option of listening to the songs picturised on Shammi Kapoor clones. And these songs sounded just as good. There was Joy Mukherjee ( similar in appearance to Shammi Kapoor ans sometimes nearly as good) and there was also Vishwajeet ( smaller built and therefore described as poor man’s Shammi Kapoor).
But that was not all. There were poor man’s Vishwajeets too. In other word, we had poor man’s poor man’s Shammi Kapoor also.
Just look at this song. It is picturised on Sujit Kumar, a small time actor in Bollywood, who finds himself doing Shammi Kapoor style herogiri in this song. He is singing a Shammi Kapoor style song in Rafi’s voice here.
The song is quite hummable, as was the case with most Rafi songs, irrespective of the hero it was picturised on , and irrespective of how big or small the music director was. Usha Khanna was the music director for this song. Gulshan Baawra was the lyricist. The movie is called Laal Bangla.
Incidentally, Sujit Kumar, the small time actor in Bollywood movie was a superstar of Bhojpuri movies. In 1970s, he was known as Amitabh Bachchan of Bhojpuri movies. So who knows, he could well have been the Shammi Kapoor of Bhojpuri movies during 1960s. 😉
