Mili khaaq mein muhabbat

Posted on: January 28, 2009

It is difficult to believe it now, but both Guru Dutt and Meena Kumari actually used to play happy roles when they began their acting careers. It was sometime in late 1950s that both began to act in sad roles and they both got typecast into such roles so much that their past roles were soon forgotten.

This particular movie “Chaudhvin ka Chand” was an especially sad movie. Not only was it a tragedy movie, its songs were tragedy songs too.

This particular song “mili Khaaq me Muhabbat” is a case in point. This song must be one of the saddest that Rafi has sung in his long career.

In this movie, it was for the first time in many yeras that Shakeel Badayuni was working with a music director other than Naushad. Shakeel Badayuni was nervous as to how his lyrics with another music director would work out. “I am too nervous, please take care of me.”-Shakkel Badayuni, one of the biggest names among Bollywood lyricists had said to Ravi.

As it turned out, the songs of “Chaudhvi ka Chand” turned out to be hugely popular and timeless classics. And this particular song was no exception. Rafi, Shakeel Badayuni, ravi – all of them were at their creative best in this song as well as in the other songs of this movie.

And of course, the song was picturised just as effectively on the screen- on Guru Dutt.

Song-Mili khaaq me mohabbat (Chaudhavin ka Chaand ) (1960) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ravi

Zindagi ki haseen raahon me
kaafile dil ke lut bhi jaate hain
pyaar ka jaam lene waale sun
jaam haathon se chut bhi jaate hain

mili khaak me muhabbat
jala dil ka aashiyaana
mili khaak me muhabbat
jala dil ka aashiyaana
jo thi aajtak haqeeqat
wohi ban gayi fasaana
mili khaak me muhabbat
jala dil ka aashiyaana

ye bahaar kaisi aayi
jo khizaa bhi saath laayi
ye bahaar kaisi aayi
jo khizaa bhi saath laayi
main kahan rahoon chaman me
mera lut gaya thikaana
mili khaak me muhabbat
jala dil ka aashiyaana

mujhe raasta dikhaakar mere caravan ko loota
mujhe raasta dikhaakar mere caravan ko loota
idhar aa gale lagaa loo
tujhe gardishe zamaana
mili khaak me muhabbat
jala dil ka aashiyaana
mili khaak me muhabbat
jala dil ka aashiyaana

How did you suddenly decide to post a sad song like this ?
But it is good – your blog has all varieties. And sad songs are as much a part of the variety as happy ones.

Oh, what a lovely song! It takes me back to Lucknow, where I lived when I was a child. I got a copy of this movie, just to see Lucknow again, not that I remember any of it from my living there, but the atmosphere in this movie is so good. Mere Mehboob is also supposed to be in Lucknow, but it lacks the atmosphere of this movie. Rafi’s voice, Shakeel Badayuni, and Ravi – great combination!
