Zindagi ka safar hai ye kaisa safar
Posted on: February 7, 2009
There were quite a few songs containing “Zindagi” in their lyrics those days, and almost all of them were very popular songs. In fact, it was like each one of these songs gave a different interpretation of “Zindagi”. Some song would call “Zindagi” “ek paheli”, some would call it a “naatak”, some would call it a “khel” etc.
There were more than one “Zindagi” song that likened “Zindagi” to “Safar” (journey). Considering that there was a Rajesh Khanna movie called “Safar” (1970), it was to be expected that one such “Zindagi” song likening it to a safar had to be there in this movie.
This song is a serious philosophical song sung by Kishore Kumar and picturised on Rajesh Khanna.
I have not watched this movie, and I am not familiar with the story line, but I can guess that the song being sung is a serious enough song, looking at the grim faces of Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore.

Song-Zindagi ka safar hai ye kaisa safar (Safar) (1970) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Indeewar, MD-Kalyanji Anandji
Lyrics
Zindagi ka safar hai ye kaisa safar
koyi samjha nahin koyi jaana nahin
Zindagi ka safar hai ye kaisa safar
koyi samjha nahin koyi jaana nahin
hai ye kaisi dagar
chalte hain sab magar
koyi samjha nahin koyi jaana nahin
zindagi ko bahut pyaar hamne diya
maut se bhi muhabbat nibhayenge ham
rote rote zamaane me aaye magar
hanste hanste zamaane se jaayenge ham
jaayenge par kidhar hai kise ye khabar
koyi samjha nahin koyi jaana nahin
aise jeewan bhi hain jo jiye hi nahin
jinko jeene se pahle hi maut aa gayi
phool aise bhi hain jo khile hi nahin
jinko khilne se pahle khizaan kha gayi
har pareshaan nazar thak gaye char agar
koyi samjha nahin koyi jaana nahin
zindagi ka safar hai ye kaisa safar
koyi samjha nahin koyi jaana nahin

Great song, one of the best philosophical numbers in Hindi movies. One error: the lyricist is Indeevar, not Sahir Ludhianvi.

Meena Kumari just before she died sent word to Rajesh Khanna that dying cancer patients do not have redness/vigor/vibrancy in their face as he did in the movie. That should give you the gist of the movie. A 3 handkerchief movie.

The movie safar is one of the best movies I ever watched in my life. It very meaningful. The songs are equally spectacular and rajesh khanna and sharmila tagore have looked lovely in this movie. When I heard of rajeshji’s death on July 18,2012 the first song which struck me was this one. July 18th was definitely a saddening day for Hindi cinema. Rip rajesh ji. You will be sorely missed by your fans.

A very thoughtful, serious and philosophical song. Bollywood has not too many such songs in its treasure.

Lovely song, Atul.
You have not seen this movie ?
It is a tear-jerker (and I know you don’t like tear-jerkers) but it is a good movie.
Superb songs, all the way.
