Kaho ji tum kya kya khareedoge

This song from “Sadhana” (1958 ) did not have Sadhana in it, just as “Kalpana” (1960) did not have Kalpana in that movie. “Sadhana” had Vyjyanti Mala and Sunil Dutt in lead roles.
The more one watches Vyjyanti Mala, the more one gets convinced that she was the greatest ever female dancer among all the leading actresses that have ever graced Bollywood movies. In most of her movies, she would have a few dances where she would leave her mark.
This movie is no exception. Here she plays a courtesan ( as I can notice from this song).
She was a Bharatnatyam trained dancer, but that did not mean she could not dance on other dance forms. Here she gives a great Kathak performance.
The lyrics of Sahir Ludhianvi are extremely hard hitting and the song mocks at the moralising hypocrites. The last para of the song is the most biting one that begins-
“mohabbat bechti hoon main
sharaafat bechti hoon me
na ho ghairat to le jaao
ke ghairat bechti hoon main”
(I sell love, I sell goodness, in case you do not have it in you, I sell honour as well)
The music was composed by N Dutta, who was creating some memorable songs those days.

After more than five decades got the chance to watch this song and re-lived my past memories. Besides all these, I enjoyed the blog and Mr. Raja’s comments too.

I don’t know whether you have seen this movie. If not, I would certainly recommend it.
It is a BR Chopra movie – so no need to say anything more. A good storyline is guaranteed, powerful message is guaranteed, high-quality acting is guaranteed, lyrics by Sahir – no need to say anymore about this…..all in all, BR Chopra movies were just fantastic.
This particular movie is very good – it was made immediately after Naya Daur. BR Chopra had a tiff with OP Nayyar (who did not ? 😉 and therefore did not take him again for this.
He went back to his trusted Sunil Dutt (with whom he had made “Ek Hi Raasta”) instead of Dilip Kumar who had just given him Naya Daur.
For Sadhana, originally BR Chopra wanted Nimmi but she was too busy. Hearing the female-dominated storyline, Vyjanthi’s mother came to his place and virtually begged him to give the role to her daughter. BR Chopra had worked with Vyjanthi in Naya Daur and had found her very professional. He had no hesitation in signing her for Sadhana.
It turned out to be a landmark movie for both him and Vyjanthimala.
