I have posted songs of many categories in this blog. One of these categories is called drunkard songs. This song is a drunkard song, but with a difference. Here , it is a lady that gets drunk and then she sings this song. It is nice to see that women’s lib had taken place in drunkard songs as early as 1967.
No, it is not Meena Kumari who sings this song, as many may think. It is Waheeda Rahman who sings this song on screen in a party.
This was a Dev Anand- Waheeda Rahman movie called Prem Pujari. In fact, I have difficulty telling this movie from “Guide” seeing that both movies had the same lead actors as well as the same team of music director, singers etc as well.

Lata had this song in her all time top 20 favorites in 1970 Filmfare Lata special issue. Other songs included Kanha re Kanha (Truck Driver), Main Piya teri (Basant Bahar), etc…

True, lata has given her all to this song. It is among the very best S D Burman created to lata. In my opinion it is comparable only to SDB’s “kaanto se kheench kar yeh aanchal” which is a very high spirits, drunk with happiness song.
It was Naushad and Shankar jaikishan who gave their best creations to Lata, still it turns out that Lata gave her best to SDB and Madan Mohan songs.

ooooh,Thank you!! this song is like an expensive chocolate treat, Waheeda Rehmaan (in the UK as Miss India for a beauty contest…),
Lata taking her singing to new heights in any category with this cabaret-like number (in fact, I was surprised at the classical style picturisation on Waheeda.
It is an extremely difficult song to sing well, so many talent show contestants have fallen flat on their faces with this one! Try it, record yourself, and see what I mean!
