Man ki been matwaari baaje

Posted on: February 11, 2009

When I watched this song, the first thing that occured to me was that this scene, if not the entire movie, was definitely inspired from the Sanskrit novel called “Rajtarangini” written by the famous Sanskrit scholar Bilhan. In that story, a music tutor is employed to teach music to the princess of a state. Afraid that the two may feel attracted to each other if they come face to face, the two are separated from each other by a curtain. The princess is told that the music tutor is ugly and the music totor is told that the princess is blind.

Seeing how the earthen pots (deepak) get lighted when the song proceeds, I guess that the song is based on Raag Deepak. This memorable duet from “Shabaab” is sung by Rafi and Lata. Shakeel Badayuni wrote the lyrics and Naushad was the music director. This song was picturised on Bharat Bhooshan and Nutan.

aaa aaa aaa

bolo magan ho prem ki boli
gaao milke
man ki been matwaari baaje

Very nice song, and I just learned from reading your blog that it may be in Raag Deepak. I am no connoisseur of music, but the music that emanated from the veena sounded like the sitar to my untrained ears!

Well, in another nice song that Atul posted a few days back, the sitar was emitting guitar sounds, so for a veena to emit sitar is peanuts !!:)))

Please do comment on the piano songs as well to tell us what esoteric sounds the piano emits in those songs. 🙂

ha ha Atul,
Hindi film piano sing: Lonely piano starts off by itself, but gets so excited by the beautiful music and lovely lyrics, that it really digs deep into itself and…

suddenly becomes not only a whole orchestra, but a “world” one, with eastern and western instruments combined!!

its all the fault of the songs for being so good:))
