Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Patthar ke sanam

Posted on: February 12, 2009

There are many well known songs, names of whose movies are often unknown. That is unlikely to happen with this song since this song “Patthar ke sanam” is also the title of the movie.

Though I knew that this Rafi song was from “Patthar ke sanam”, that is all I knew about this song till today. Only today I have come to know that its lyricist was Majrooh Sultanpuriwhereas Laxmikant Pyarelal had composed the music.

This is a song that is sung in the movie by Manoj Kumar sitting in a piano. Apart from being a piano song, this is also a party song. And as discussed by me earlier, party songs those days would always be sung in a big palatial residence of a lead actor- in this case, the heroine Waheeda Rahman. When one looks at the size and opulence of such places, one is led to believe that every lead character of Bollywood movies those days was a relative of the Nizam of Hyderabad.

This song also has Mumtaz, and she definitely lights up the screen with her presence.

It is an out and out iconic song.

Song-Patthar ke sanam (Patthar ke Sanam) (1967) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

Pathar ke sanam tujhe hamne
muhabbat ka Khuda jaana
Pathar ke sanam tujhe hamne
muhabbat ka Khuda jaana
badi bhool huyi arre hamne
ye kya samjha ye kyaa jaana
Pathar ke sanam

chehra tera dil me liye
chalte rahen angaaron pe
tu ho kahin
tu ho kahin sajde kiye
hamne tere rukhsaaron pe
ham sa na ho koyi deewaana
Pathar ke sanam tujhe hamne
muhabbat ka Khuda jaana
Pathar ke sanam

socha tha ye badh jaayengi
tanhaayiyaan jab raaton ki
rasta hamen
rasta hamen dikhlaayegi
sham e wafa un haathon ki
thokar lagi tab pahchaana
Pathar ke sanam tujhe hamne
muhabbat ka Khuda jaana
Pathar ke sanam

Ae kaash ke hoti khabar
toone kise thukraaya hai
sheesha nahin
sheesha nahin saawar nahin
mandir kaa ek dil dhaaya hai
saara aasmaana hai veeraana
Pathar ke sanam tujhe hamne
muhabbat ka Khuda jaana
badi bhool huyi arre hamne
ye kya samjha ye kyaa jaana
Pathar ke sanam

I like this song very much.
Lovely lyrics too.

Atul, I guess the lyricist is Majrooh, but you mention Anand Bakshi in the write up.

It was absent mindedness on my part. Thanks for pointing it out. Now I have corrected the writeup.
