Wo chand khila wo taare hanse

I have noticed that the word “Chaand” figured quite frequently in movie songs of 1950s and 1960s. And many of these songs are quite well known even today.
In contrast, one can hardly find any song containing the word “chaand” in the later decades. The fact that “Chaand” (moon) lost its romantic valu after mankind set foot on it in 1969 may be a reason for that.
Here is a lovely romantic song “wo chaand khila wo taare hanse” from “Anaadi” (1969). Sung by Lata ( though Mukesh also sings one line), this song was picturised on Nutan and Raj Kapoor.
This is a love song, and by my definition, it is a “Chaayageet” song as well. Shailendra wrote the lyrics and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music for this song.
It is`an evergreen song that has not lost its appeal 50 years after it was created. It is a timeless classic, no doubt about that.

In my opinion, regarding chand not being used after the moon landings, maybe it has a lot to do with it, but I think the nature of film songs changed in the 70s into its own format: prior to that I think filmi songs were more related to poetry; alot of the poetic forms, and allegories, were eroded throughout the 70s with the result, once the greats had stopped writing, the filmi song was a different animal. I think that’s why the songs of umrao jaan, silsila and 1942 stand out, they are more in line with these songs. The large bulk of modern songs are not very much related to indian poetic forms.

its still used…the word chaand that is….example…the bolna halke song…gulzar and Javed Akhtar use it a lot….sometimes sameer does too…after all he is anjaan’s kid

Good true blue poets may still be using it. Not so true blue poets may not be bothering much with quality when it comes to writing classy lyrics.
