Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Mere dushman tu meri dosti ko tarse

Posted on: March 10, 2009

In Bollywood movies, hero who is betrayed tends to sing sad songs. In those songs, the hero laments his bad luck, but he would rarely wish ill for his beloved. These songs may wallow in self pity but bitterness towards the lady in conspicuous by its absence.

But that is not so in this song. And in fact, this song made me do a double take when I heard this song for the first time.

In this song, Dharmendra feels betrayed by Asha Parekh seeing her in a party carrying an infant. Dharmendra feels so enraged that when he is asked to sing his customary stage song ( which he specialised in those sings), he given vent to his anger for her in no uncertain way.

In fact, the song is so bitter and so vitriolic that I could not put it in one of my 100 odd tags. So I created a new tag for this song. Yes, this song is a “hate” song, a polar opposite to the “love” songs that are so frequent in Bollywood movies.

The movie is “Aaye din bahaar ke”. The lyricist Anand Bakshi may have been in an especially nasty mood when he wrote this lyrics. Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music. Rafi sang this song.

It is a popular song, but to this day, I believe that this song goes far too much over the top.

Song-Mere dushman tu meri dosti ko tarse (Aaye din bahaar ke)(1966) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

mere dil se sitamgar toone achchi dillagi ki hai
ke banke dost apne doston se dushmani ki hai
mere dushman tu meri dosti ko tarse
mere dushman tu meri dosti ko tarse
mujhe gham dene waale tu khushi ko tarse
mere dushman

tu phool bane patjhad kaa, tujh pe bahaar na aaye kabhi
meri hi tarah tu tadpe tujhko qaraar na aaye kabhi
tujhko qaraar na aaye kabhi
jiye tu is tarah ke zindagi ko tarse
mere dushman tu meri dosti ko tarse
mere dushman

itnaa to asar kar jaayen meri wafaayen o bewafaa
ik roz tujhe yaad aayen apni jafaayen o bewafaa
apni jafaayen o bewafaa
pashemaan hoke roye, tu hansi ko tarse
mere dushman tu meri dosti ko tarse
mere dushman

tere gulshan se zyaadaa veeraan koyi veeraanaa na ho
is duniyaa mein koyi teraa apnaa to kyaa, begaanaa na ho
apnaa to kyaa, begaanaa na ho
kisi kaa pyaar kyaa tu berukhi ko tarse
mere dushman tu meri dosti ko tarse
mujhe gham dene waale tu khushi ko tarse
mere dushman

Atul, I’ve been very curious about this song. Dharmendra’s expressions are restrained and yet full of hate. My urdu is rudimentary at best and I’d be very grateful for an English translation.
