I have heard this song many a times. Knowing who the singer was no problem, and knowing that the song was from “Mere Huzoor” was no problem too, but that is all I knew about this song.
Yesterday I watched the video of this song for the first time and then I came to realise that this song was picturised on Jeetendra and Mala Sinha. The bigger and more important realisation was that it was a rail song. Yes, Mala Sinha is travelling in a train and Jetendra, a fellow traveller sings this song addressing her.
What fantastic lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri and what remarkable music by Shankar Jaikishan. What divine voice by Rafi !
This song incidentally was a song of 1968, the platinum year of Bollywood music. And this song is as platinum as any song can ever be. Just out of this world !

Writing from Los Angeles, California. Grew up in Delhi in the late 60’s with beautiful music and outstanding lyrics! Deeply miss the music of my generation. What a wonderful song this is! Thanks so much for sharing.

I’m right now in Taipei on a business trip and Pradip’s comments brought back memories of Rafi saheb! I left india more than 44 years ago but singers and songs like these never fade! Thanks Atul for your service!
