Tum hi tum ho mere jeewan mein

I found it interesting that the same Shankar Jaikishan, who were the regular music directors of Raj Kapoor were the regular music directors of Shammi Kapoor as well. But while SJ would use Mukesh ( and sometimes Manna Dey) for Raj Kapoor and create hit songs, they would create hit songs with Rafi for Shammi Kapoor.
Here is a rare kind of a song song where it is not Mukesh but Rafi who is singing for Raj Kapoor. The movie is “Ek Dil Sau Afsaane”. It is a duet in fact, sung by Rafi and Lata and picturised on Raj Kapoor and Waheeda Rehman. Shailendra is the lyricist.
A Rafi- Raj Kapoor song ! Now it is a rare combination, but the result is no less magical. How I wish that there were more such songs.

Song-tum hi tum ho mere jeewan mein (Ek dil sau afsaane) (1963) Rafi, Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
tum hi tum ho mere jeewan mein
phool hi phool hain jaise chaman mein
tum hi tum ho mere jeewan mein
phool hi phool hain jaise chaman mein
ek ho mere tum is jahaan mein
ek hai chanda jaise gagan mein
ek ho mere tum is jahaan mein
ek hai chanda jaise gagan mein
tum hi tum ho
tum hi tum ho
tum mile mujhe nayaa jahaan mil gaya
jhoomti zameen ko aasmaan mil gaya
tum hi tum ho mere jeewan mein
phool hi phool hain jaise chaman mein
ek ho mere tum is jahaan mein
ek hai chanda jaise gagan mein
tum hi tum ho
tum hi tum ho
tumse dil ka chain hai tumhi se hai qaraar
tum na roothna ke rooth jaayegi bahaar
ek ho mere tum is jahaan mein
ek hai chanda jaise gagan mein
tum hi tum ho mere jeewan mein
phool hi phool hain jaise chaman mein
tum hi tum ho
tum hi tum ho
tum ho mere kaun zindagi hai kyuun hasin
sun lo meri dhadakanein to aayega yaqin
ek ho mere tum is jahaan mein
ek hai chanda jaise gagan mein
tum hi tum ho mere jeewan mein
phool hi phool hain jaise chaman mein
tum hi tum ho
tum hi tum ho

Naushad used Rafi for Raj Kapoor in DAASTAN (1950) even though by that time Mukesh had already started singing for Raj Kapoor In BARSAAT (1949). The song was ‘Ta ra ri ta ra ri’ ( Rafi-Suraiyya) which became highly successful. It was also a rare occasion for Naushad to use westernised tune for this song.

I did not know this song is on Raj Kapoor. It sounds like Dev Anand song. Shankar Jaikishan had Rafi singing for all heroes except Raj Kapoor. Be it Biswajeet, Joy mukherjee, Rajendra Kumar, Dev Anand or Shashi Kapoor, Jeetendra etc.
About Naushad, he was also the one to use Mukesh’s voice on Rajendra Kumar in Saathi(1968).

Listen how Lata has beautifully rendered this song. As far as Rafi is considered, there is absolutely no match.
Rafi has poured his ‘heart and soul’ in delivering this song. In all the duets, the co-singer might be upto the mark, as far as ‘surr’ is concerned, but the uniqueness of Rafi was that he would put emotions in the song like no one ever did. Just listen to each and every word sung by Rafi Sb in this particular song, pure magic….!!!
In the last stanza, when Rafi utters “Dhadkan”, it feels as a heart “Beats” at that particular moment. Rafi was par excellence, amazing & rare talent, indeed.
I am sure Raj Kapoor would be very happy for this song being sung by the King, the Singing Sensation, the Musical Maestro, Rafi Sahab……!!!

Wow…I loooove this song !!!
I have loved it from the time I was a little boy – never knew till today which movie it is from, who it is picturised on.
Am very surpised to see Rafi singing for Raj Kapoor, that too in 1963.
Can only be because Mukesh and Manna Dey were both probably suddenly unavailable or that another hero was suddenly replaced in the movie by Raj Kapoor.
Or maybe SJ were experimenting – they knew Mukesh worked with Raj and Rafi saab with Shammi, how about trying Rafi with Raj ?
Lovely song.
Lilting music.
