Jaa re jaa re ud jaa re panchchi

When I read the title of the song, I thought it must be a clone of the “chal ud ja re panchi” song. And I was not expecting much.
But as I began to listen to this song, I began to get mesmerised. I listened to this song a few more times, and then a few more times. I wondered how I had totally missed out listening to this song all these decades.
This song “jaa re jaa re ud jaa re panchhi” may have similar lyrics to “chal ud ja re panchi” and the songs are from the same genre, but that is the only similarity between the two songs. ” Chal ud ja re panchi” is a song from “Bhabhi” and it was sung by Rafi. This song “jaa re jaa re ” is from a Dev Anand -Mala Sinha movie called “Maaya” (1961). Salil Chowdhary composed the music for this movie and Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote this song. Lata sang this song and the song is absolutely mesmerising.
Rafi song “chal ud ja re panchhi” is an amazing song, and I wondered if any song with similar lyrics can ever be that good. This song shows that a song with similar words can be just as good. What a song ! This song must be among the very best that Lata has ever sung.
And the picturisation is superb, too.

Like earlier Salil Chaudhury musical treat Madhumati, Maaya also had 8-9 good songs. And, fabulous song list from Maaya is incomplete without following from the same movie:
1) Excellent Lata & Hemant like voice (of Dwijen Mukherjee) duet
2) Song about life (& dil, nice talk and ice cream). Another excellent Rafi solo.
3) Typical Majrooh style of lyrics in Rafi voice. Nice song picturized on Agha/Helen and most probably got overshadowed by other popular songs in the movie.
4) Asha solo – don’t remember picturaization
And “aye dil kahan teri manzil” is also in Lata voice. Better than Hemant Kumar like male voice version (of Dwijen Mukherjee).

“Maaya” reminds me of another Dev Anand/Mala Sinha musical bonanza, “Love Marriage”.
Let me request songs from that one also.

‘ ke ‘ ujad gayi bagiyaa mere man ki
The lines are repeated five times and always the word is ‘ke’ and not ‘ kyun ‘. Listening to the song all those years ago on radio, i too thought the word is ‘kyun’. But it is not so. With head phone, the word is very clear.

IT is very much there- betwen “Maasoom” and “Madari”. SO far four songs have been posted in this movie, and all are outstanding songs.
