Chanda re mori patiya le jaa

Posted on: March 28, 2009

I have read a lot about this song, but believe me, it is only yesterday that I heard this song for the first time. And I loved this song instantly.

This song is from a forgotten movie called “Banjarin”. It is sung by well known singers Lata and Mukesh, but other names involved in the creation of this song are quite unknown. For instance, the lyricist for this song is Pandit Madhur and the music director is called Pardesi. This song was picturised on Manhar Desai and Kanchan Kamini.

The song is a timeless classic. I count myself lucky that I finally got to listen to the song, so what I was just half a century too late while doing so. 😉

Song-Chanda re mori patiya le jaa (Banjaarin) (1960) Singer-Lata, Mukesh, Lyrics- Pt Madhur, MD- Pardesi

Lyrics

naina to dukhan lage
panth nihaar nihaar
har dhadkan papeehaa bani
piyaa pukaar pukaar

Chanda re mori patiyaan le jaa
patiyaan le ja
saajan ko pahunchaa de re
ho likh sake jawaab unhein tu
mera pataa bataa de re
chanda re

Chanda re mori patiyaan le jaa
patiyaan le ja
sajni ko pahunchaa de re
ho likh sake jawaab unhein tu
mera pata bataa de re
chanda re

palkon ki hai kalam banaayi
kaajal bahkar bani sihaayi
kaise likhoon kahaani gham ki
tu hi mujhe bataa de re
Chanda re mori patiyaan le jaa
patiyaan le ja
saajan ko pahunchaa de re
chanda re

ham khush hain
ham diya hai toone
ye ehsaan kiya hai toone
jahaan raho khush raho
meri is dua ka asar dikha de re
Chanda re mori patiyaan le jaa
patiyaan le ja
sajni ko pahunchaa de re
chandaa re

o aakaash ke sundar darpan
tu hi sajni tu hi saajan
bichde dilon ko phir se milaade
rota chaman hansaa de re
Chanda re mori patiyaan le jaa
patiyaan le ja
saajan ko pahunchaa de re
ho likh sake jawaab unhein tu
mera pata bata de re
chanda re

Am also hearing this song for the first time, Atul.
What a beauty it is – I have totally fallen in love with it now.

This song is from a lesser known music director too.
Just imagine how much musical talent we had those days where the talents of many highly gifted people must have remained untapped.

Strangely enough, I have heard this song before and I have liked it, too. In fact, I think there were some other good songs in this movie, because the name rings a bell, but I cannot find them. I was able to get the lyrics, but I have to hear the song itself to recognize it! I seem to remember that there was a nice song by Rafi, but I could be wrong.

How do you manage to unearth these long-forgotten songs? I am glad you do it, anyway, because otherwise these songs would have been lost forever.
