Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 23
————————————————
On 28th March of 2009, six songs had made their appearance on the blog. The songs and the films represented are listed below.
Man Darpan Hai | Dushman | 1939 |
Mitti Se Khelte Ho | Patita | 1953 |
Sach Kahta Hoon Bahut Haseen Ho | Jaali Note | 1960 |
Chanda Re Mori Patiyaan Le Jaa | Banjaarin | 1960 |
Baalamwa Bolo Na Bolo Na | Picnic | 1966 |
Yoon Na Sharmaa Phailaade Apni Gori Gori Baanhen | Parwaana | 1971 |
Of these six films, ‘Dushman’ (1939), ‘Patita’ (1953), ‘Jaali Note’ (1960), ‘Picnic’ (1966) and ‘Parwaana’ (1971) have been yippeee’d by now. The 1960 film ‘Banjaarin’ remains. This film has eight songs in all. Three songs have been showcased here. Today, we bring on the fourth song, on the 10th anniversary of this film’s debut here.
‘Banjaarin’ is produced by Ratan, under the banner of Ratan Pictures, Bombay. The film is a costume drama, directed by Jaswant Jhaveri. The list of actors reads like Kanchan Kamini, Manhar Desai, Lalita Kumari, Sundar, Indira Bansal, Dalpat, Pal Sharma, Neelu, Shri Bhagwan, Bela, TN Sinha, Saroj, Murari, Paro, Prayag, Rehana, Paulson, Geeta, Chetan Kumar, Malika, Sheela R, CH Singh, Shekhar Purohit, Shriram, and S Chaddha.
The eight songs of this film are all penned by Pt Madhur. The music is by Pardesi – a lesser known artist whose name appears as music director for maybe 4 or 5 films only. The singing voice in this song is Geeta Dutt.
The video clip of this song is available. The clip is somewhat dim, and hence much details or even identification of artists on screen is not very feasible. The song is overlapped with a lot of other action in the film. The song itself seems to be a club dance song, or maybe a villain’s den song. There are a number of artists, but I am able to recognize only Sunder. I am not able to identify the main dancer in this song. Is that Sheela Ramani? I am not sure. I would request our more knowledgeable readers to please help with identification of artists.
The song is constructed well. I am hearing it for the first time today. It sure has an interesting rhythm and beat to it, and it has been rendered by Geeta Dutt with the customary zest. Listen and enjoy.
[PS: I have not been able to decipher two words in the first stanza. I request other folks to please help insert the correct words.]
Song – Qismat Ke Khel Tu Khel Khilaadi (Banjaarin) (1960) Singer – Geeta Dutt, Lyrics – Pandit Madhur, MD – Pardesi

“Baankelal”(1972) was produced and directed by Ratan Kumar. The movie had Prithviraj Kapoor, Sulochana Chatterjee, Sheel Kumar, Abhi Bhattacharya, Sunder etc in it.
It appears that the movie was started in 1960s but it could get released only in 1972 and it flopped at the box office.
The movie had eight songs in it.
Here is the first song from “Baankelal”(1972) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor. Pt Madhur is the lyricist. Music is composed by Pardesi.
Video of the song is available and one can see that the song is a movie opening song which gets played as credits get displayed on screen. The video version contains only part of the song. Audio version is much longer.
With this public lament song about the misery of women in a brothel, “Baankelal”(1972) makes its debut in the blog.

Song-Ye husn ka hai baazaar yahaan (Baankelal)(1972) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Madhur, MD-Pardesi
Lyrics
ye husn ka hai baazaar yahaan
aurat ki kahaani bikti hai
aurat ki kahaani bikti hai
ik zinda laash yahaan bikti
ik murda jawaani bikti hai
ye husn ka hai bazaar yahaan
aurat ki kahaani bikti hai
ik zinda laash yahaan bikti
ik murda jawaani bikti hai
jo biwi ko thhukraate hain
wo thokar khaane aate hain
o o o
o o o
jo biwi ko thukraate hain
wo thokar khaane aate hain
is paap ki putli ke aangan mein
puny kamaane aate hain
bebas aurat ki aahen aur
dil ki kurbaani bikti hai ae
o o o
dil ki kurbaani bikti hai
ye husn ka hai bazaar yahaan
besharmi ki botal khulti hai
aur toot’te laaj ke jaam yahaan
o o o o o o
besharmi ki botal khulti hai
aur toot’te laaj ke jaam yahaan
laala ban aate raam yahaan
baabu ban aate shyaam yahaan
gokul ki gwaalin bikti hai
aur awadh ki raani bikti hai ae
o o o o
ye husn ka hai bazaar yahaan
aurat ki kahaani bikti hai
ik zinda laash yahaan bikti
ik murda jawaani bikti hai
ye husn ka hai bazaar yahaan
o o o o o
o o o o o
jis ghar mein beta aata hai
aur likhta prem ka khaata hai
o o o
o o o
jis ghar mein beta aata hai
aur likhta prem ka khaata hai
bhugtaan ko lene is jodi se
baap bhi aata jaata hai
in kaale kothon pe mardon ki
meharbaani bikti hai ae
o o o o
meharbaani bikti hai
ye husn ka hai bazaar yahaan
ye aasmaan se nahin giri
is dharti ki hi jaayi hai
o o o o
ye aasmaan se nahin giri
is dharti ki hi jaayi hai
jitne hain inke diwane
kai baap hai aur kai bhaai hain
kulvadhu ki mehandi aur choodiyaan
har ek nishaani bikti hai ae
o o o o
har ek nishaani bikti hai
ye husn ka hai bazaar yahaan
aurat ki kahaani bikti hai
ik zinda laash yahaan bikti
ik murda jawaani bikti hai
ye husn ka hai bazaar yahaan

Here is the sixth and final song from “Pardesi”(1970) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata and Usha Mangeshkar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.
What a hidden gem of a song it is ! It is a synchronised dance song picturised on Mumtaz and Padma Khanna. The picturisation shows people gathered around the dancers who sing and dance while we have Manmohan Krishna playing “Been” and a gentleman (whom I am unable to identify) playing guitar.
This song can be described as a snake dance song, a dance form which has become quite popular nowadays thanks to Bangladeshi cricketers. 🙂 The snake dance steps of theb Bangladeshi cricketers were taken from the “Nagina”(1986) song Main teri dushman dushman tu meri main naagan to sapera. This dance step has been mass copied by Sri Lankan cricket watching public as well as famous people (like Sunil Gavaskar, for instance) by now. So the “novelty” value of that snake dance step has been lost. Have no worry. Here is another snake dance song, one that is performed by Mumtaz and Padma Khanna. Being a synchronised dance song, it is a fit snake dance song for a pair of Bangladeshi batsmen batting together at the crease. They can dance like Mumtaz and Padma Khanna whenever they feel that that are on the verge of winning a match. 🙂 And do not forget to give credit to me for this wonderful snake dance song. 🙂
With this song, “Pardesi”(1970) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Yesterday (31st July 2017) was the birthday of Mumtaz, one of Hindi cinema’s leading heroines in the early 70s.
Yesterday also happened to be the death anniversary of Rafisaab, and our posts were focussed on remembering him. So this post for Mumtaz is being posted a day late. Hopefully, if she is reading this, she won’t mind. 🙂

Missing Films of 1960s – 29
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
With this post, I introduce another missing film from the 1960s. The film is ‘Khufia Mahal’ from 1964. As I checked out the songs of this film, I find some very lovable compositions. And why not. The music is from the mind of that one another unsung genius of that era – Pardesi. With a career that was limited to just four films, one sees him active from 1960 to 1972. And after that, lost in the dusks of anonymity. Nothing much more is available in terms of information, other than the 30+ songs he has created, some of which are real gems.

Today’s song is from film Pardesi-41. This was a Ranjit Movietone film, directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi and music by Khemchand Prakash.
Pardesi seems to be a popular Title for film producers Films with Pardesi title were produced in 1941, 1957, 1970 and 1993. Pardes was made in 1950 and 1997. Pardesi as a prefix to film titles were for 7 films. Pardesi-41 was a significant film for actress, singer Khursheed, because with this film, she became famous and came to be recognised as a singer. Earlier, she had worked in many films and also had sung songs, but Pardesi-41 music gave her such a turn in life that Chandulal Shah-the owner of Ranjit- decided to make her Saigal’s Heroine, whenever he would make a film with that king of melody. He was so much impressed with her singing style.

‘Phir milenge jaanewaale yaar dasvidaaniyaa…’
Some people contend that to say ‘good bye’ is to die a little. Readers may wonder why a post introducing a song should begin with this statement.

“Pardesi”(1970) was based on a Novel of the same name by Kushwah Kant, who was a prolific Hindi novelist. At least forty novels (may be more) written by him were published but sadly little information about him is available online. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on him.
