Waqt karta jo wafa
Posted on: March 31, 2009
I had never heard about this movie called “Dil ne pukaara” (1967). And I may not be alone. This movie had Shashi Kapoor and Rajhshree in lead roles and I do not think this movie was any great shakes at the box office.
This is a “piano” song picturised on Shashi Kapoor. The song is sung by Mukesh in his inimitable style. It is a sad song where the hero blames time for his inability to win over his lady love, whereas in reality it is his inability to muster the courage and approach the girl that is to be blamed.
Hero’s dilemma is very nicely penned by Indeewar and the music of Kalyanji Annadji creates the right ambience for the voice of Mukesh and lyrics of Indeewar to get the message acroos in an effective manner.

Lyrics
Waqt karta jo wafaa
Waqt karta jo wafaa
aap hamaare hote
ham bhi auron ki tarah
ham bhi auron ki tarah
aapko pyaare hote
Waqt karta jo wafaa
apni taqdeer me pahle hi se
kuchh to gham hai
apni taqdeer me pahle hi se
kuchh to gham hai
aur kuchh aapki fitrat me wafaa bhi kam hai
warna jeeti huyi baazi to naa haare hote
Waqt karta jo wafaa
aap hamaare hote
Waqt karta jo wafaa
ham bhi pyaase hain
ye saaki ko bataa bhi na sake
ham bhi pyaase hain
ye saaki ko bataa bhi na sake
saamne jaam thaa aur jaam uthaa bhi na sake
kaash ham ghairate mehfil ke na maalik hote
Waqt karta jo wafaa
aap hamaare hote
Waqt karta jo wafaa
dam ghutaa jaataa hai
seene me phir bhi zindaa hain
dam ghutaa jaataa hai
seene me phir bhi zindaa hain
tumse kyaa ham to
zindagi se bhi sharmindaa hain
mar hi jaate na jo
yaadon ke sahaare hote
Waqt karta jo wafaa
aap hamaare hote
ham bhi auron ki tarah
ham bhi auron ki tarah
aapko pyaare hote
Waqt karta jo wafaa

A little word here & there makes a difference.
Second Stanza – 6th line :
‘ kaash ham ghairate mehfil ke na ” MAARE ” hote ‘

Waqt kartaa jo wafaa…..
were fate’s truer to me, you would be mine….
I too would’ve been dear to you, like others
I am destined to some sadness, to begin with
plus you have a nature which is lacking in faithfullness,
otherwise i won’t lose a tie/game which was (as good as) won
I am needy too, this
I failed to impress upon the provider
I could see the prayer, but couldn’t utter it.
I wish, i was not so beholden in deference of the company
(tongue tied, in awe of the supreme presence)
I feel the suffocation within me
And still I am alive
Not just with you, but I am embarrassed with my own life
Should have been dead by now
Were it not for those memories, which have kept me alive
were fate’s truer to me, you would be mine….
like others, I too would’ve been to you, a dear one

Thx for posting the lyrics, but do u think it is possible for you to translate the lyrics, even is just jotting down the lines without wholeness?
If not, could u send a link where I can find the english translation of this lyric?

Hi Klara, here is my original attempt at translation, so please forgive me for any unintentional misrepresentation and mistakes:
If Time were to do justice
You would be mine.
I too, like others,
Would be beloved of yours
If Time were to do justice.
Oh, bequeathed to my fate lies some despondency.
And alas! You too are disposed to no perfect fidelity
Else would not have lost in a stake that was a win.
If Time were to do justice
You would be mine.
If Time were to do justice
Oh, I thirst too,
That I could not bring up to tell the sommelier.
The drink layin front,
and could wrought not to lift it up
How I wish I was not abashed with deferring to the courtsey of the gathering
If Time were to do justice
You would be mine.
If Time were to do justice
My heart suffocates and still am alive.
What with you, I am ashamed too of the life!
Death would have been mine,
Were it not for the memories to uphold me.
If Time were to do justice
You would be mine.
I too, like others,
Would be beloved of yours
If Time were to do justice.

This was my quick translation. I now see, I could have done much better. I could not resist to tell one instance – instead of “If Time were to do justice”. it should read “If time favored”
