Jeewan ke safar mein raahi

Posted on: April 5, 2009

It is a very cute, and at the same time very philosophical song. In fact, those who may have only listened to the song without watching the movie may even call it a happy-sad song.

I have just watched the picturisation, including the scene just before the song. Dev Anand is driving Nalini Jaywant in her car and he feels like singing. You see there were no radio or music systems in cars those days. Nalini Jaywant takes exception and orders him to drive silently. At that Dev Anand starts driving rashly. Nalini Jaywant, fearful of accidents ( like all good ladies seated adjacent to the driver are) asks him to drive slowly and allows him to sing, provided he drives safely and slowly.

I guess the two were not married in the movie. A wife seated beside Dev Anand would have just ordered him to drive slowly and silently and Dev Saab would have complied. 😉

Having received the green signal to sing, Dev Anand sings this nice song “jeewan ke safar me raahi”. The lyrics of Sahir Ludhianvi are so wonderfully philosophical , poignant and enphatic. S D Burman’s music matched the mood perfectly. This was one of the earliest Kishore Kumar hit songs and one that has very deservingly gone on to become a timeless classic.

Wonderful song, and wonder picturisation. A gem of highest specifications indeed!

tar ratara ra tararara hoho
aaa
Jeewan ke safar me raahi
milte hain bichhad jaane ko
aur de jaate hain yaadein
tanhaayi me tadpaane ko
ho ho ho ho ho
hmm
Jeewan ke safar me raahi
milte hain bichhad jaane ko
aur de jaate hain yaadein
tanhaayi me tadpaane ko

ye roop ki daulat waale
kab sunte hain dil ke naale
ho ho o o
ye roop ki daulat waale
kab sunte hain dil ke naale
taqdeer na bas me jaane
inke kisi deewane ko
Jeewan ke safar me raahi
milte hain bichhad jaane ko
aur de jaate hain yaadein
tanhaayi me tadpaane ko

jo inki nazar se khele
dukh paaye museebat jhele
ho o o
jo inki nazar se khele
dukh paaye museebat jhele
phirte hain ye sab albele
dil leke mukar jaane ko
Jeewan ke safar me raahi
milte hain bichhad jaane ko
aur de jaate hain yaadein
tanhaayi me tadpaane ko

dil leke daghaa dete hain
ik rog lagaa dete hain
ho o o
dil leke daghaa dete hain
ik rog lagaa dete hain
hans hans ke jalaa dete hain
ye husn ke parwaane ko
Jeewan ke safar me raahi
milte hain bichhad jaane ko
aur de jaate hain yaadein
tanhaayi me tadpaane ko
ho ho ho ho
hmm hmm

jeevan ke safar mein raahi
miltey hain bichhad jaane ko
aur de jaate hain yaadien
tanhaai mein tadpaane ko
ro ro ke inhi raahon mein
khonaa padaa ik apne ko
ooo
ro ro ke inhi rrahon mein
khonaa padaa ik apne ko
hans hans ke inhi raahon mein
apnaayaa thhaa begaane ko
jeevan ke safar mein raahi
miltey hain bichhad jaane ko
aur de jaate hain yaadien
tanhaai mein tadpaane ko

tum apni nai duniya mein
kho jaao paraaye ban kar
aaaa aaaaaa aaaaaaaa
tum apni nai duniya mein
kho jaao paraaye ban kar
jee paaye to hum jee lengey
marney ki sazaa paaney ko
jeevan ke safar mein raahi

aur de jaate hain yaadien
tanhaai mein tadpaane ko

jeevan ke safar mein raahi, miltey hain bichhad jaane ko
aur de jaate hain yaadien, tanhaai mein tadpaane ko

Strangers become companions in this journey of life
Only to part ways again
And leave behind memories
For the heart to ache in the hours of loneliness

ye roop ki daulat waale, kab sunte hain dil ke naale
taqdeer na bas me jaane, inke kisi deewane ko

Abounding in the wealth of beauty
They are averse to listen to the pleadings of the heart
(I pray) that destiny keeps the passionate and unwise admirers
Away from their influence and out of their cluthces

jo inki nazar se khele, dukh paaye museebat jhele
phirte hain ye sab albele, dil leke mukar jaane ko

Those who dare to flirt with their glances
Are doomed to sorrow, and difficult times
(You can’t trust them, they are)
Always on the look out
To steal the hearts and then feign innocence, or even awareness

dil leke daghaa dete hain, ik rog lagaa dete hain
hans hans ke jalaa dete hain, ye husn ke parwaane ko

They only know betrayal after taking your heart away
And will inflict an intense malady (of painful craving)
(What does it matter to them, for)
They will smilingly char to death
The admirers of beauty

It is with a heavy heart and tears in the eyes
That I part ways (today) with one very dear, very close to my heart
One who was once a stranger on these paths of life
And my heart had welcomed and received as my own

tum apni nai duniya mein kho jaao paraaye ban kar
jee paaye to hum jee lengey marney ki sazaa paaney ko

You will be lost in your new world
And will become a stranger once again
And me, I would try to live if I can
Only that life would be a wait for the final punishment

This movie was shown on Doordarshan (the weekend Hindi movie) in May 1978.
So how do I know ? Because I was on a summer holiday to Delhi to visit my uncle/aunt.
And watched this movie on their TV (I had never seen a TV in my life before then, not having a TV where I grew up in Eastern India).

Nice movie it was. And this song stayed in my mind (and another one “dil ki umangein hain yahaan”).

It was also the first time I heard of Nalini Jaywant.

Your songs often bring back memories. Thanks, Atul.

To day after nearly 50 years after I saw the movie in the theater I still enjoy the song as much I did in the theater. Typical of Dev Ananad picture and song. Great.

Atul ji,

This famous song also has a version that is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. (I have sent you the link and other details separately in a mail).

The story of this film is quite involved. Dev Anand is the real son of a rich man, Prabhu Dayal. In a complicated twist of past events, Nirupa Roy, in a fit of vengeance, switches new born infants, stealing the rich man’s son, and placing her own son in his cradle instead. She raises Prabhu Dayal’s son as her own, but forces him to be disguised as a middle aged, physically deficient, and unlikable character, who works as a Munim under Prabhu Dayal, managing his estate. (I am very sure readers are now on to the story line and will remember Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) and Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961)). On the other hand, Prabhu Dayal raises Nirupa Roy’s son as his own, and sends him abroad for education. This son is Pran. Nalini Jaywant is a friend’s daughter, that Prabhu Dayal would like to bring into his family as his daughter-in-law.

The Kishore version of the song is when Prabhu Dayal sends his Munim to receive Nalini Jaywant from the distant railway station, and Dev Anand decides to be himself for this occasion and not the unlikable Munim. The outcome is blossoming of romance between the two. More events happen after this. Pran returns, Prabhu Dayal tries to push Pran and Nalini Jaywant together. Dev Anand is the ticklish competition that Pran cannot overcome. The ghosts of the past come to haunt the story, as Nirupa Roy forces Dev Anand to give up his aspirations for Nalini Jaywant. Although not understanding the true reasons, Dev Anand decides to abide by her wishes. More machinations happen. Munim ji is discredited, and Nalini Jaywant is to return to her family in preparation for the planned wedding to Pran.

The Lata version of the song is when Munim ji is directed to drop Nailini Jaywant to the railway station, and again he decides to abandon his disguise and goes as himself. The knowledge of the impending separation is hanging heavy on both the lovers’ minds, and in this situation, now Nalini repeats the song, albeit with heavy undertones of sadness and dejection.

Lovely songs, both the versions.

Complete lyrics (Lata version) with poeticized translation in English

जीवन के सफर में राही मिलते हैं बिछड़ जाने को
और दे जाते हैं यादें तन्हाई में तड़पाने को
Over the journey of life, travellers we encounter
To part away in the middle, sometimes forever
Left behind are only the memories innumerable
To yearn in pain, we try to remember whenever!!!

रो रो के इन्हीं राहों में खोना पड़ा इक अपने को
हंस हंस के इन्हीं राहों में अपनाया था बेगाने को
I cried and cried, the day you decided to depart
How you could forget – you resided in my heart
How blessed I was, the day I had fallen in love
Don’t forget, that day – you were still a stranger!!!

अब साथ न गुज़रेंगे हम लेकिन ये फ़िज़ां वादी की
दोहराती रहेगी बरसों भूले हुए अफ़साने को
No anymore, someone will ever see us together
The valley, silent witness to our love, however
Will keep recounting episodes of forgotten past
Not just day-after-day, but too, year-after-year!!!

तुम अपनी नयी दुनिया में खो जाओ पराये बनकर
जी पाये तो हम जी लेंगे मरने की सजा पाने को.
Be blessed with someone, you have now chosen
Be your life full of joy and happiness of heaven
No need to worry for me, I’ll be able to live life
Be it like death, or be it a punishment for ever!!!
