Rajshri productions had hit upon a sureshot formula for success in the decade of 1970s. They would make movies for a small target audience who wanted to watch love stories full of nice songs and heartwarming plots. This was a winning formula because love stories by definition required new faces ( and as such Rajshri Productions saved money on hiring big name actors). In these movies, story and music were the real stars and Rajshri productions had built up a small loyal audience for their movies.
Not just new actors, Rajshri Productions movies gave breaks to new singers too. Singers like Suresh Wadkar, Jaspal Singh, Chandrani Mukherjee, Hemlata etc got that initial breaks with Rajshri Production movies, and more specifically because of Ravindra Jain, who was the designated music director cum lyricist of these movies for the entire 1970s.
Though Yesudas ( a big playback singer in South ) got his first break in Bollywood movies thanks to Salil Chowdhary, it was Ravindra Jain who gave him most of his early Bollywood songs. It is his songs sung in Rajshri Productions movies that helped Yesudas gain recognition in the field of Bollywood music .
Here is a nice song from a Rajshri Productions movie called “Sunayana” (1979). It was a movie based on the story of “City Lights”, a Charlie Chaplin movie made in 1930s. In “Sunayana”, Naseeruddin Shah ( then a struggling actor in Bollywood) plays the role that was played by Charlie Chaplin in “City Lights”. Rameshwari, who had become a big name, thanks to unexpectedly huge success of an early Rajshri productions movie called “Dulhan wahi jo Piya man bhaaye”, played the title role.
Other main characters in the movie were Vijayendra Ghatge and Jagdeep. I loved the character of Jagdeep who plays a jailbird who while trying to help Naseeruddin escape out of jain, finds himslef to be out of jail instead thanks to an “error”, and he tries very hard to go back into the jail , without much luck.
I have not watched “City Lights”, but I thought that “Sunayana” was a nice movie to watch. And being a Bollywood movie, it had songs, something that western movies do not have. 😉 And this song, which is the theme song/ title song of the movie, is a very nice and melodious song to listen to.
Song-Sunayna sunayna.. aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho(Sunayna) (1979)Singer-Yesudas, Lyrics- Ravindra Jain, MD- Ravindra Jain
Lyrics
sunaynaa sunaynaa sunaynaa sunaynaa
aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho
ho aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho
aur main tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
main bas tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho
ho aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho
aur main tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
main bas tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
pyaari hain phoolon ki pankhudiyaan
par teri palkon se pyaari kahaan
phoolon ki khushboo se ki dosti
ki inke rangon se yaari kahaan
sunaynaa sunaynaa sunaynaa sunaynaa
aaj khile phoolon ko tum dekho,
ho aaj khile phoolon ko tum dekho,
aur main tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
main bas tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
oonche mahal ke jharokhe se tum
ambar ki shobhaa nihaaro zaraa
rangon se rangon kaa ye mel jo
aankhon se man mein utaaro zaraa
sunaynaa sunaynaa sunaynaa sunaynaa
door aasmaanon ko tum dekho,
ho door aasmaanon ko tum dekho,
aur main tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
main bas tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
lo din dhalaa raat hone lagi
taaron ki duniyaa mein kho jaao tum
main jaag kar tumko dekhaa karoon
so jaao tum thodaa so jaao tum
sunaynaa sunaynaa sunaynaa sunaynaa
aaj mere sapnon ko tum dekho,
ho aaj meethe sapnon ko tum dekho,
aur main tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
main bas tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
aur main tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
main bas tumhen dekhte huye dekhoon
