kamar patli nazar bijli

Posted on: April 12, 2009

If one watched a bollywood movie in 1960s and 1970s, one was sure to have a Helen dance accompanied by a song. This song will have little relevance to the story line of the movie and Helen will not be found anywhere else in the movie, but her dance was still regarded as a major attraction of the movie.

The song was often sung seductively by a female singer, mostly Asha Bhonsle. But Helen could dance even when she was not lip syncing a song. Here it is Vishwajeet, who is lip syncing in Mahendra Kapoor’s voice and Helen gives a dance performance that must have been a highlight of this movie called “Kahin Din Kahin raat” (1968) for sure.

S H Bihari was the lyricist and O P Nayyar had composed the music.

Song-Kamar patli nazar bijli (kahin Din kahin raat) (1968) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-S H Bihari, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

kamar patli nazar bijli
suraahidaar gardan
kayaamat se meri jaan kam nahin ho
kamar patli nazar bijli
suraahidaar gardan
kayaamat se meri jaan kam nahin ho
ye zulfon ki ghata kaali
machalta hai jaise saawan
kayaamat se meri jaan kam nahin ho
kamar patli

badan aisa hai chikna
ke phisalti hain nigaahen
tadap jaata hai dil apna
chamkti hain jab baahein
zameen jhoome kadam choome
jawaani ka ye aalam
tumhi kahdo ke aise me
tumhein kaise na chaahein
kareeb aakar kabhi sun lo
hamaare dil ki dhadkan
kayaamat se meri jaan kam nahin ho
kamar patli nazar bijli
suraahidaar gardan
kayaamat se meri jaan kam nahin ho
kamar patli

nazar jiski padi tumpar
kalejaa thaam legaa
ishaara tum jise kardo
wo kab aaraam legaa
magar mujhse tumhen dilbar koi shikwaa na hogaa
mera dil hai jo lutkar bhi tumhaara naam legaa
na choothegaa kabhi mujhse
wafaa ka paak daaman
kayaamat se meri jaan kam nahin ho
kamar patli nazar bijli
suraahidaar gardan
kayaamat se meri jaan kam nahin ho
ye zulfon ki ghataa kaali
machalta hai jaise saawan
kayaamat se meri jaan kam nahin ho

Another of my “one-year-old” songs 🙂
It is so nice to listen to these songs after so many years.
It takes you back in time.

I doubt if the word “suraahidaar” has ever been used in any other song. But is so beatifully symbolises a beautiful neck. Well done, S H Behari saab.

This was a popular song, I presume. Like you have said, Helen’s dance was almost a must for producers – people used to remember the song/dance if nothing else.

The film flopped, the heroine was extremely ameturish, the storyline typical of a B grade film, but the songs were gems. Typical OP Nayyar compositions. Helen looked overmade up with her green contact lenses but carried off her role in her typical way, which is what one remembers of the movie apart from the music.

So you watched this movie when it was first released ? I was too young at that time to remember much. I will be thankful if you can share your experiences of those days.
