I had never heard this song before. And few people may have heard this song considering that this is from a very old movie called “Tansen” (1943). This movie, as the name suggests was the story of Tansen, the court singer of Akbar. The lead actors in this movie were K L Saigal and Khursheed.
Those were the days when the concept of playback singing was not there and the actors needed to sing for themselves. Not just that, they needed to sing live ( viz while acting their roles).
We have had several K L Saigal songs in this blog, including one song from this movie itself, but this song is not a Saigal song. Rather this song is sung by Khursheed , the heroine of this movie.
Though Khursheed is not all that well known today, she must be regarded as one of the pioneers among female singers during the early days of movie singing in Bollywood movies.
And what a superbly rendered song this is. The lyricist Pt Indra Chandra has written a superb song and Khemchand Prakash’s music is wonderful. And I am just bowled obver by the singing of Khursheed. She sings in the style prevalent in those days, and that adds to the sweetness of the song.
I heard this song for the first time today and I just loved it. I have since listened to this song something like a dozen times, and I cannot have enough of this song. It is a priceless gem.
And before I forget to mention it, she is quite pretty to look at too as can be seen in this picturisation.
