Today, 16th may 2009 is the day when the results of Indian general elections will be known. It is expected that no party will get an absolute majority and so attempts will be made to cobble up a coalition government at the centre. Some local political leaders will play a big role in this exercise.
One such important leader is Jayalalitha of Tamilnadu. These days she is known as an important politician in Tamilnadu who alternates between being coming back to power ( becoming the chief minister) in one election and being routed in the next. At present her party is in the opposition in Tamilnadu.
Like many important politicians in South India, Jayalalitha too made her entry to politics via movies. She was a leading actress in Tamil movies during 1960s and 70s. She even acted in one Bollywood movie called “Izzat” (1968). Here she plays the second female lead. She plays a tribal girl who falls in love with Dharmendra . There were two Dharmendras in this movie, by the way, one for Tanuja the heroine, and other for Jayalalitha.
Jayalalitha comes hard on Dharmendra in this movie, though Dharmendra is cold towards her, mainly because it is the other Dharmendra and not “her” Dharmendra.
Here is this song “Ruk jaa zaraa.. babu re babu re babu re” from “Izzat” (1968) . It is sung by Lata and picturised on Jayalalitha and Dharmendra. Sahir Ludhianvi wrote the lyrics Nd the typically racy music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Jayalalitha (known as “Amma” now) had another nice song in this movie, and I will post that song tomorrow.
