Wow! This song is from “Putlibai” (1972) ! I have listened to this song in the past and loved it, but I became aware about any details of this song only just now.
The movie “Putlibai” itself was such an elusive movie that few people were awere of it. Its qawwali ” aise besharm aashiq hain ye aaj ke” was a phenomenon though. This qawwali was so overwhelmingly associated with the name of the movie that the other songs of this movie had no space to breathe. And it is such a pity.
This qawwali, plus the fact that the movie was a non starter at the box office meant that other songs of the movie stood little chance at glory.
This song sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle is such a wonderful song that I would call it one of the best songs of 1972. Of course, I am saying so with the benefit of hindsight, but believe me, I would have said the same in 1972 too, had I got more opportunity to listen to this song. And this song did not get played much at the loudspeakers or radio those days. In fact, even the qawwali used to get played only in the weekly qawwali programme on radio Ceylon, and rarely on the farmaishi geet programme of Radio Ceylon or even in Binaca geetmala.
This song is written by Anjaan and the music director was Jay Kumar. This song was picturised on Sujit Kumar and Jaimala, two bit actors who played the lead roles in this movie.
This is an amazing song, one that deserved far better popularity than what it actually managed.

Song-Mere meet bataa tujhe mujhse kab pyaar hua aur kaise (Putlibai) (1972) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Jai Kumar
Lyrics
Mere meet bata tujhe mujhse kab pyaar hua aur kaise
Mere meet bata tujhe mujhse kab pyaar hua aur kaise
kiya nazron se waar diya toone mohe maar
kaahe pooche baar baar huaa pyar kaise
Mere meet bata tujhe mujhse kab pyaar hua aur kaise
chhanke teri paayal ke ghunghroo meri dhadkan me
jaadu tere geeton ka ghulta gaya mere man me
phir aaya re pyaar ka saawan pyaase mere jeewan me
phire purwa bayaar jaise nadiya ki dhaar
tohe dekhoon to hammar jiyaa dole aise
ankhen meri ishaaron mein ikraar hua kab kaise
Mere meet bata tujhe mujhse kab pyaar hua aur kaise
dekha koyi andekha sapna teri aankhon mein
jaagi koyi anjaagi halchal meri saanson mein
khil gayin re pyaar ki kaliyan mehki meri raaton mein
tan man ka singaar warnaa sainya tera pyaar
chori chori ye bahaar aayi jaane kaise
dil me dabi muhabbat ka izhaar hua kab kaise
Mere meet bata tujhe mujhse kab pyaar huaa aur kaise
ho kiya nazron se waar diya toone mohe maar
kaahe pooche baar baar huaa pyar kaise
Mere meet bataa tujhe mujhse kab pyaar hua aur kaise
hmm hmm hmm hmm

Thanks for finding out such a lot about my farmaish so quickly!
I totally agree with you about the quality of the song, the music is so catchy and when one sees the picturisation it fits in beautifully: the urban male (I presume) singing with a western beat and music and the heroine, a rural girl, has a more traditional/folk beat yet they merge together seamlessly even in the refrain!
This was one good music director and I guess he never made it big, this song is an indication of how much talent was out there.
Nice to see how nicely Kishore and Asha have sung for what was presumably a small-time movie with unknown actors.
