O saba kehna mere dildaar ko

Posted on: May 24, 2009

I have already posted two songs from “Kaabuliwaala” (1960). This movie was a very moving tale of a Pathan from Afghanistan who lives in Calcutta away from his family, including his young daughter, and he misses her every day. He adores Minnie ( a young girl) in Calcutta and after initial apprehensions, she too takes to him.

This story was written by none other than Ravindranath Tagore himself, and this is one story that will move anyone who reads this story. I read this story in my Hindi textbook at school ( in class V or VI, I am not sure which one) and it left an indelible mark in my mind.

This story was made into this movie called “Kabuliwala”. I have yet to see this movie, but I think the story was powerful enough for me.

This movie has some remarkable songs. The movie maker signed up Salil Chowdhary as music director and I think that was a brilliant masterstroke. The songs of this movie are some of the most memorable songs one can come across. Who can forget “Ae mere pyaare watan” sung so poignanatly by Manna Dey, or “Ganga aaye kahaan se Ganga jaaye kahaan”, sung by Hemant Kumar .

Here is a third song from this movie, and this one is sung by Rafi. Here, the Pathan ( played by Balraj Sahni) is feeling especially homesick and nostalgic and he is remembering his daughter. His Pathan colleagues in the meanwhile sing this song that is appropriate for his mood.

Here is this nice song from “Kaabuliwal” which was written by Prem Dhawan.

Song-O saba kahna mere dildaar ko (Kabuliwala) (1961) Singer-Rafi , Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD- Salil Chowdhary

Lyrics

o yaa qurbaan

wo aankhen thi dilbar ki yaa nargis-e-mastaanaa
dekhe huye us but ko ab ho gayaa zamaanaa
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko

o yaa qurbaan
dekhenge kab wo soorat jis pe bahaar sadke
ye dil to kyaa hai yaaron Kaabul Kandhaar sadke
kis tarah bhoole nigaah-e-yaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko

o yaa qurbaan
kaisi hai ye qayaamat, o tu hi bataa Khudaayaa
jitnaa bhulaayaa us ko utnaa wo yaad aayaa
kyaa qaraar aaye tere beemaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko
o sabaa kahnaa mere dildaar ko
dil tadaptaa hai tere deedaar ko

Thank you sir for fulfilling my wish. Kabuliwala is truly a masterpiece movie and the songs are lovely. I have seen this movie umpteen times and every time I cry seeing the climax. I recommend this movie to everyone who loves classics and who wants to know what a thorough performance is. Balraj Sahani was truly a great actor. I wonder why today’s lyricist and music director can’t come up with songs like this, except for a few….Thank you again…..

Atul,

Thanks a lot for posting this wonderful gem of a song!

Just one correction: Tagore’s name is spelt as Rabindranath, and not Ravindranath.
