‘Ek Maasoom’ (1969) was produced by Ghulam Nabi Durrani and was directed by Khalid Akhtar. The cast included Tanuja, Salim Durrani (debutant), Abhi Bhattacharya, Prem Chopra, Jagdeep (guest appearance), Azra, Uma Bhende, Sulochana Chatterjee, Murad, Surendra, Helen etc. The film is a suspense cum court room drama.

In this film, Salim Durrani has triple roles. He is not to be confused with cricketer, Salim Durrani who had worked in a lead role with Praveen Babi in the film, ‘Charitra’ (1973). Salim Durrani of ‘Ek Maasoom’ (1969) appears to be related to the film’s producer, Ghulam Nabi Durrani.

Much of the film’s story is presented in flashback mode. However, I give below the details of the film’s story in a sequential format.

Ramesh (Salim Durrani) is involved in criminal activities in which his friend, Jagdeep (Jagdeep) is the gang leader. Ramesh has fallen in love with Lata (Tanuja) but her father, advocate Gangadhar (Murad) does not like their intimacy while her brother, Mohan (Prem Chopra) is in favour of Lata getting married to his friend, Ramesh. So, Gangadhar wants to know the background of Ramesh before he agrees for the marriage. Mohan is unaware of Ramesh’s criminal activities. Jagdeep becomes aware that his friend, Ramesh, wants to marry Lata.

Mohan meets Ramesh to know as to what he does for a living. Ramesh does not reveal anything to him. But after Mohan has left, Ramesh decides to give up his criminal activities for the sake of his love for Lata. However, Jagdeep does not like Ramesh leaving his gang. One day, Jagdeep meets Lata’s father in his house and reveals the true background of Ramesh. Lata is now prevented in meeting Ramesh who later comes to know that it is Jagdeep who had revealed his past activities to Lata’s father. A misunderstanding between the two develop and Ramesh feels that Jagdeep is trying to ween away his love interest, Lata (Tanuja) to prevent him from leaving the gang.

During the heated discussion on this issue, Jagdeep gets killed by Ramesh and he escapes from the house when he sees police reaching the house to arrest him. However, later he is caught by the police. He is presented in the court where he pleads that he is not Ramesh but Deepak who has nothing to do with the murder of Jagdeep. The police inspector who has arrested him identifies him as Ramesh because he has been known to change his names as Deepak and Jagdeep. Prosecutor advocate, Gangadhar decides to present Rekha (Uma Bhende), as witness to identify whether the arrested person is Ramesh or Deepak because she is the wife of Deepak with a child.

During the cross examination of Rekha, some important revelations is brought up. Rekha is the sister of defence advocate, Manohar who got his sister hurriedly married to Deepak without knowing his antecedence except that he was a professional singer. Otherwise, she would have become an unwed mother due to an unfortunate incidence of her rape by an unknown person when she was staying in Calcutta (Kolkata). It was Deepak who volunteered to marry Rekha. Four months after the marriage a boy was born to Rekha. One day, Deepak on his singing assignments left for Kolkata after which he never returned to Rekha.

In the next court hearing, a summons is issued to Lata (Tanuja), the daughter of advocate, Gangadhar as witness because she was in love with Ramesh and she can identify the accused Ramesh. Lata presents herself in the court for cross examination during which she identifies the accused as Ramesh. During the cross examination, she reveals all that had happened between Ramesh and herself and the opposition to their proposed marriage from her father. After knowing that Ramesh had a criminal history, she has broken the relationship with Ramesh despite his assurance that he had left his past activities. And her this decision has led him to commit the murder of Jagdeep.

The court issues summons to Sarladevi (Azra) the wife of look-like Ramesh who is known as Jagdeep. She tells the court that the accused in the court Ramesh/Deepak is the same as her husband with the name, Jagdeep who also used to be away from the house for some period without any information.

The judge (Surendra) is confused, so are advocate Gangadhar and advocate Manohar. The judge adjourns the court proceeding for discussion in the private room. In the end, it transpires that it was Jagdeep, the boss of criminal activities who, to put Ramesh in the jail as a punishment for leaving his gang, has killed one of his gangsters and put the blame on Ramesh to the police. During the court proceedings, the gang boss, Jagdeep confesses that he had killed the person and not Ramesh. After getting to know that Deepak has been arrested for murder and the court proceedings are going on, Ramesh and Jagdeep make a visit to the court and identify themselves as the brothers of Deepak who had lost touch with each other after the death of their parents in the childhood. Deepak used to remain absent from his house because he used to go for his singing concerts while Jagdeep being a CID Inspector, used to be away from home without informing his wife. After confessing, the gang boss, Jagdeep ciommits suicide by drinking poison. Deepak and Jagdeep are united with their wives, Rekha and Sarladevi, respectively while Ramesh is set free to be united with Lata. And this time, advocate Gangadhar is not opposing their marriage.

The film had seven songs written by Fareed Tonki which were set to music by N Datta, Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘mothrama chhodiye saare gham’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and picturised on Helen. The context of the song is that Ramesh (Salim Durrani) is upset that Lata (Tanuja) has decided to break her relationship with him when she comes to know of his past criminal activities. He is in a sombre mood and visits a restaurant for a drink when Helen is set to start her dance.

The composition of the song will surely remind the listeners of O P Nayyar style of the song composition.
