Baat chalat nayi chunari rang daari

Posted on: June 1, 2009

In 1950s, we had a few movies which showed musical showdown by two musicians. Both of them would contest against each other trying to score musical brownie points, before the hero ( singing in the voice of a mainstream singer) would be adjusted to have won against the lesser actor ( singing in the voice of a classical singer).

These musical fights were similar to physical fights that became popular in later decades where Amitabh Bachchan would be shown fighting Shetty and defeating him.

For those who have seen Shetty- Amitabh Bachchan fights, one would realise that there was no way Amitabh Bachchan would have lasted more than a few seconds against Shetty. But these movies being Bollywood movies, hero wins and the aam janta is happy.

These musical fistifights were no different, to my mind. Sometime ago, I had posted a song from “Basant Bahaar” (1956) where hero Bharat Bhooshan sings in Manna Dey’s voice and beats another singer singing in the voice of Pt. Jasraj. It was like Amitabh Bachchan beating not Shetty but the undertaker !

This song is another such contest from the movie “Rani Roopmati”(1959). In this song the hero sings in the voice of Rafi and the other singer is classical vocalist Pt Krishnarao Chonkar, who not only sings but acts in the picturisation too.

Here is this nice song, which was written by Bharat Vyas. S N Tripathi was the music director.

I had not heard this song before and I really enjoyed it.

Are you sure this is a competition? I haven’t seen the film yet, but to me this seems more like Bharat Bhushan’s character learning from his guru.

It is quite surprising that although this song has been posted 10 years back, yet it has gone unnoticed that the classical singer who sang the BASANT BAHAR song alongwith with Manna De is Bhimsen Joshi and not Pt. Jasraj

This is not a competition. Bharat Bhushan is learning.

Thank you Deepakji for commenting here. It highlighted the song. I heard it for the first time and am surprised it speaks to Raam and is not a Radhe-Krishn song.
Happy Holi
