Rang aur noor ki baaraat kise pesh karoon

Posted on: June 8, 2009

Madan Mohan is often recalled for composing many superb songs that were sung by Lata. Quite a few of these Lata songs have gone on to become timeless classics.

Madan Mohan has composed many superb songs with other singers as well.

Here is a song sung by Rafi under the music direction of Madan Mohan. This song is picturised on Sunil Dutt, Meena Kumari and others.

From the picturisation, it is seen that Sunil Dutt and Meena Kumari are in love with each other, but Meena Kumari is getting married to someone else. And Sunil Dutt is asked to sing at the reception.

The poignancy of the situation has been described amazingly well in the lyrics. Sahir Ludhianvi has come up with this song which in fact has gone on to become one of the most memorable lyrics of this genre.

This song “rang aur noor ki baaraat kise pesh karoon” is such an iconic song that this has to be one of the most memorable songs of all time. And frankly speaking, I was not aware that Madan Mohan was the composer of this song. This single song is enough to assure immortality to the creators of this song.

Of course, the creators of this song, viz Rafi, Sahir Ludhianvi and Madan Mohan have been legends of their fields and they have created many great songs in their careers. And this is one song that has to be among the very best in their careers.

Song- Rang aur noor ki baraat kise pesh karoon (Ghazal) (1964) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics- Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

rang aur noor ki baraat kise pesh karoon
ye muraadon ki haseen raat kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon
rang aur noor ki baraat kise pesh karoon
ye muraadon ki haseen raat kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon

Maine jazbaat nibhaaye hain usoolon ki jagah
Maine jazbaat nibhaaye hain usoolon ki jagah
apne armaan piro laaya hoon phoolon ki jagah
tere chehre ki
tere chehre ki ye saugaat kise pesh karoon
ye muraadon ki haseen raat kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon

ye mere sher mere aakhri nazraane hain
ye mere sher mere aakhri nazraane hain
main un apnon me hain jo aaj se begaane hain
betaaluq si mulaaqaat kise pesh karoon
betaaluq si mulaaqaat kise pesh karoon
ye muraadon ki haseen raat kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon

surkh jode ki tabotaab mubaarak ho tujhe
surkh jode ki tabotaab mubaarak ho tujhe
teri aankhon ka nayaa khwaab mubaarak ho tujhe
ye meri khwaahish ye khayaalaat kise pesh karoon
ye muraadon ki haseen raat kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon

kaun kahta hai ke chaahat pe sabhi ka haq hai
kaun kahta hai ke chaahat pe sabhi ka haq hai
tu jise chaahe tera pyaar usi ka haq hai
mujhse kahde
mujhse kahde main tera haath kise pesh karoon
mujhse kahde main tera haath kise pesh karoon
ye muraadon ki haseen raat kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon
rang aur noor ki baraat kise pesh karoon
ye muraadon ki haseen raat kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon
kise pesh karoon

Another of my all-time favourite songs.
Sahir’s lyrics as usual floor me completely.
And Madan Mohan saab’s music of course.

Rafi saab is able to bring across so beautifully the feeling of loss/frustration in Sunil Dutt (lover who is losing his beloved to another).

I have known this whole song by heart from a very young age. I thought I would need it sometime in my life. 😉

Another favourite which came to mind today for some reason. This song has two more versions in the film. Another Rafi version and Lata version (On Meena Kumari). Seen this movie long ago on T. V. This sad version is right at the end of the movie. Due to shock Meena Kumari has lost her voice. That’s why she refuses to marry Sunil Dutt. Prithvi Raj Kapoor is Meena Kumari’s father. As the song ends she regains her voice.

Another Rafi version :

Lata version :

In the film 1st is Ghazal sung by Lata, then a reply in this rafi version. Then reference to thes in last climax version.

They are all different in mood but it is a sort of communication between characters.

Regards.

It is always a pleasure to find and share such gems. Refined and understated, communication, i would call these three.

Atul,

I feel, two more versions of this song as pointed out by nahm need separate discussions as lyrics are different.

In GHAZAL, Sahir Ludhianvi set a very high standard of poetry in Hindi films. To my knowledge, this was the second time that Sahir Ludhianvi teamed up with Madan Mohan after RAILWAY PLATFORM (1955).

The two more version songs are actually ghazals, whereas “Rang aur noor ki” is in song form. Basic compostion/tune and rhyming in the lyrics is same for all three (…….Kise pesh karoon). Since the ghazals begin with different words “naghma-o-sher ki saugat “, they can be discussed as different song.

Anyway, some words need to be changed in this song :

1st stanza :
tere ‘sehre’ ki ye saugaat kise pesh karoon

3rd stanza :
surkh jode ki ‘tab-o-taab’ mubaarak ho tujhe
surkh jode ki ‘tab-o-taab’ mubaarak ho tujhe
teri aankhon ka nayaa khwaab mubaarak ho tujhe
‘main ye’ khwaahish ye khayaalaat kise pesh karoon

Dear Nahm,

Would you mind explaining the difference between the ghazal form and the song form? I had all along thought that “Rang aur noor” (sad version) was a ghazal.

Manju ji,

Ghazal is a collection of sha’ir’s(two line couplet). Both lines of first sha’ir are rhyming with each other, or ending the same/similar way (Not necessarily with same words). In the example below both lines of first shair (Which is known as “Matl’aa) are ending with same words. For subsequent shair’s till the last one (Which is Maqt’aa) only second line is required to be in rhym with first Sha’ir.

“Naghma-o-sher ki saugat kise pesh karoon” – Rafi version

1. naghma-o-sher ki saugat kise pesh karoon
yeh sulagtey huey jazbaat kise pesh karoon

2. ishq ki garmiye jazbaat kise pesh karoon
yeh sulagte huey din raat kise pesh karoon

3. husn aur husn ka har raaz hai parde mein abhi
apni nazron ki ishaarat kise pesh karoon

4. teri awaaz ke jadoo ne jagaaya hai jinhe
wo tasawwur wo khayalat kise pesh karoon

5. aye meri jaane-e-ghazal aye meri imaan-e-ghazal
ab siwaa tere yeh nagmaat kise pesh karoon

6. koyi hamraaz to paoon koyi hamdam to mile
dil ki dhadkan ke ishaarat kise pesh karoon

“Rang our noor ki baraat ” is not a ghazal. Though the mukhda is two line couplet, the stanza’s are three liners, for e.g.

ye mere sher mere aakhri nazraane hain
main un apnon me hain jo aaj se begaane hain
beta’aluq si mulaaqaat kise pesh karoon

The third or fourth line is rhyming with mukhda in song or geet form of poetry, so that the mukhda(or a line from mukhda) is sung after each stanza.

A song/geet/nazm is usually a topical form of poetry , which is supposed to continue on the same topic. But a ghazal is about different things in different shair’s. Though in filmy situation that is not the case.

Hope i have answered your query adequately. I shall be happy to clear if there is any doubt.

Nahm ji,

You have made it very clear, thank you…

It turns out that many of my favourite ‘ghazals’ are not ghazals at all. Still, no less enjoyable for that 🙂
