So Jaa dukhiyaare
Posted on: June 24, 2009
Earlier, I have posted a Lata song picturised on Maa-Beta ( played by Meena Kumari and Daisy Irani) and the music was composed by Hemant Kumar.
This particular song is also created by the same team ( only the lyricist here is different, viz Bharat Vyas). And in this song too, the mother is seen urging the kid to “so jaa” (go to sleep), but that is where the reseblance ends.
I do not think this song is a lullaby. This song appears like a sad song sung by a suffering mother that Meena Kumari seems to be playing here. From the picturisation, it appears that she is visually impaired ( they did not haver such politically correct terms those days, though) and her song is more a lament against the raw deal that fate has dealt her than a lullaby. And the kid seems suitably agitatted too, and rightly so.

Song-So jaa dukhiyaare (Sahaara) (1958) Singer-Lata, Lyrics- Bharat Vyas, MD- Hemant Kumar
Lyrics
so jaa dukhiyaare, dukhiyaa ke pyaare
dukh teraa koyi jaane naa
so jaa dukhiyaare, dukhiyaa ke pyaare
dukh teraa koyi jaane naa
chup ho jaa re, ab naa rulaare
tu hi hai, is dukhiyaa kaa dhan
tu hi hai, mere sukh kaa chaman
nainon ki jyoti, mamtaa kaa moti
maiyyaa kaa dil naa dukhaare
chup ho jaa re, ab naa rulaare
so jaa dukhiyaare, dukhiyaa ke pyaare
jeewan mein aayaa toofaan
jeewan mein aayaa toofaan
rooth gayaa hamse bhagwaan
qismat ne gheraa, chaayaa andheraa
jiye ham kis ke sahaare
so jaa dukhiyaare, dukhiyaa ke pyaare
dukh teraa koyi jaane naa
chup ho jaa re, ab naa rulaare
chup ho jaa re, ab naa rulaare
