Mera nanha kanhaiyya ghar aaya

I have posted a few “lullaby” songs in this blog, where the mother sings lullabies to her young one. But that is not the only kind of songs that Bollywood mothers sing to their children.
Here is a song where a mother is taking care of her young kid ( changing nappies, washing the kid etc) and singing happily about the joy that the young one has brought to her life.
This song is from “Bhabhi Ki Choodiyaan”(1961). This movie is known for its iconic song “jyoti kalash chhalke”, but this movie has other nice, even though less known songs. This mother- child song is one which I listened carefully today and watched its picturisation too, and I was highly impressed. Lata’s singing and its picturisation on Meena Kumari (and the baby) is just superb. Here are two ladies, none of whom had babies of their own,giving us such a remarkable song about the joys of motherhood.
The lyrics by Pt Narendra Sharma are in pure text book Hindi and listening to these words are wonderful, just wonderful. The words chose to convey the feelings of the mother could no have been any better. I do not think that the words that were commonly in use in Bollywood music scene those days could have created the same effect. And Sudhir Phadke, the unheralded music director has again shown his ability to compose a classy song.
This song is a rare gem. There is no doubt about that.

Lovely song. Lata was at her best in this period i guess.
