Aaj gaawat man mero jhoom ke

Posted on: September 17, 2009

“Baiju Baawraa” (1952) was a musical blockbuster the likes of which has never been seen again. It set such high standards that emulating them was going to be next to impossible for the movies that came.

This movie told the story of “Baiju Baawraa”, a classical singer in Mughal era, who competes against Tansen, the court singer of Mughal emperor Akbar.

Most songs in this movie were sung by mainstream singers, and they did a grand job. But when it came to the tour de force, viz the musical showdown between Baiju Baawraa and Tansen to pick the winner, it had to look authentic.

And so Naushad, the music director, decided to use two doyens of Hindustani classical singing for this song. So D V Paluskar and Amir Khan were called upon to sing this song. And what follows is a delightful musical duel in Hindustani classical singing, which leaves the audience spellbound, and wanting for more as the song ends after a little over 5 minutes.

Most mainstream audience run away from classical singing, but listening to this song is a delight even for lay persons. Naushad, the music director deserves great praise for deciding to create a pure classical song in this movie. The preparation that must have gone into creating this song must have been meticulous and thorough.

The song is written by Shakeel Badayuni.the song was picturised on Bharat Bhooshan (playing Baiju Baawraa) and Surendra (playing Tansen). The song is in Raag Desi and the taal is teen taal.

I tell you Baiju Bawra and for that matter, Naushad saab, were both special and will have a very special place in Hindi film music.
