I have mentioned in the past that Salil Chaudhary’s music was about quality rather than quantity. Just about every song that he created was a labour of love. He spent lots of time getting inspiration for his tunes. When he was in search of inspiration for new tunes, he would go to his kitchen a cook a delicacy (Illish fish, perhaps ?) and he would come up with his tunes.
Here is a song from “Annadaata” (1972). It is sung by Kishore Kumar, who had taken over as the number 1 male playback singer a few years ago. This song is a racy one, which is picturised on Ani Dhawan who sings this song while riding a bicycle. This is a racy number of the kind that had become the trend those days.
This is a lovely song to listen to, and shows us why Kishore Kumar was the most popular male playback singer at that time. I must confess though that I do not recall listening to this song when this song and the movie was released in 1970s. The fact that the movie was a box office failure could be the reason for this song ending up as a less known one.
Yogesh is the lyricist of this song.

It took Kishore a number of ‘takes’ before he could finally record “Guzar jaaye din” ! At last he did it. When rehearsing he first sat on the sofa then at Salil’s feet saying that his place was there for this song! At the end of the day it sounds as if it was so easily sung but you can imagine the requirements of this song which compelled Kishore Kumar to sit at Salil Da’s feet

Again another lovely number from this film. I think I’ve heard the original Bengali version of this by Lata but can’t find it on youtube done around 1970 I believe. As a comparison, here it is but sung by Arundhati Hom Chowdhury. But the Kishore version is incomparable IMO.

Its a lovely song and definitely one for Kishore. (I hadn’t seen or heard it before.) And the scenery is very nice too.

I think, one more bicyle song is there from Pyaasa. It was picturised on Guru Dutt and Mala Sinha. It is “Hum apke akhonko pe iss dilko gira de toh, hum mundke palko ko iss dilko gira de toh ?”, right ?
