Tu..u..u Mungdaa Mungdaa Main Gud Ki Dali

Posted on: September 19, 2009

There were five Mangeshkar siblings- four sisters and one brothers, viz, Meena, Lata, Asha (Bhonsle), Usha, and their brother Hridaynath. Out of the five, Lata and Asha were the two who have sung thousands of songs and they have gone on to become household names. Other three siblings have also sang songs in movies, but they are very few.

Out of the three lesser known siblings, Usha Mangeshkar has been the more “prolific”, so to say. She got very few opportunities to sing, and on a few occasions where she did, sometimes these songs became quite popular. For instance, she got to sing the songs of “Jai Santoshi Maa” (1975), and the surprise success of that movie meant that the songs sung by her in that movie became popular too.

Here is a song from “Inkaar” (1977). This B grade movie is not recalled much, but this song became popular among the front benchers. The idea of this song is quite innovative, one must say. The movie makers decided that instead of having a cabaret in a bar, why not indigenise the theme a bit and have an indigenous setting- viz a bar with desi daru, frequented by desi looking riff raffs, and a desi chaalu song, instead of cabaret.

And whom did they sign on to perform the desi dance ? None other than the one and only Helen. Yes, Helen, whom one is used to seeing dressed as a cabarat dancer and singing typically in Asha Bhonsle’s voice, is seen dressed like a Maharashtrian villager and she performs a dance that is breathtaking and different from her usual item numbers.

The voice of Usha Mangeshkar suits this dance perfectly. Majrooh Sultanpuri, a veteran lyricist wrote this chaalu song. This song is a daaru song, which can be called a drunkard song too, even though it is not the dancer, but others who are drunk. Music is by Rajesh Roshan.

The seedy characters assembled in the daaru room includes Keshto Mukherji- whose hilarious performances as a drunkard is remembered to this day. Keshto Mukherji would have no dialogues except the occasional “hic”, and still he would leave the audience in splits, that is how convincing he was as a drunkard in these movies.

Here it is Keshto Mukherji who sets the ball rolling, so to say, by resting his head on the shapely waist of Helen, only to have his head jerked away with a forceful thumka by Helen.

This is a great great drunkard song from an otherwise forgotten movie. Kudos to Usha Mangeshkar and Helen, not to speak of Majrooh and Rajesh Roshan, to come up with wonderful song.

“Inkaar” was not a BGrade movie at all, it was a taut thriller, and very well directed. In fact the setting for this song was quite appropriate as Amjad, the vicious criminal is on the run, and takes refuge in this adda on the way.

I think you should do a bit of research about the movie itself, apart from the song, then the situation is much better explained.

Hope you do not mind this, I enjoy your blog and would love it to be a little more in depth 🙂

If you haven’t seen a movie, you don’t need to call it as “B” grade….first see the movie & then give the review. It was not your typical bollywood masala which in my eyes is the real B grade stuff. People like you can not a respect a realistic, amazingly well directed & one of the best Thriller movies ever….go,watch your typical B grade stuff.

Hahaha, you need not be worked up if I call a movie B grade . I have watched many movies in my life and I do not always remember having watched them.

I checked up and realised that I had actually watched this movie in night show the first time it was released. I recall that this movie was clearly inspired from a foreign movie.I do not recall having liked this movie at that time. The movie itself did not do well. Of course one cannot judge a movie by how it did at the box office. Or may be I disliked the slow pace of the movie, or the fact that any movie with Shreeram Laagoo (forever looking mournful and disapproving) made it a boring movie for me.Now I remember going to the movie reading Vinod Khanna’s name and hoping for a dhishum dhishum action, and being disappointed.

May be I will like it more if I watch this movie again.

Yes, it was not a B grade movie. I stand corrected.

i think the lines in the second antara should be
“aafat ki chaal” and not “aapas ki chaal”
also “tu jis pe naina daal aankhon se pyaala satak jaaye” should be
“doon jis pe naina daal aankhon se pyaala satak jaaye”

am i right Atul?

In this context ( the song ) , Mungda means A BIG ANT in Marathi , also evident from the clip that Helen is seen inverting a glass tumbler to trap a BIG ANT . I think ( by referring to other sites ) the lyricist of the song is Majrooh Sultanpuri, not Prem Dhawan . There is a controversy going on the song being directly incorporated in recently released Total Dhamaal with Sonakshi Sinha replacing Helen . Lata Mangeshkar and Rajesh Roshan expressed their displeasure over the makers / composers of Total Dhamaal even did not intimate the original composers about their deeds not to talk of taking permission .
