I keep stumbling upon forgotten gems almost on a daily basis, and look what I have unearthed here ! This song is from a movie called “Biraadari” (1966). I am sure most people, including me , are aware of “Baraadari” rather than “Biraadari”.
When I watched the picturisation of this song, I could see that it was picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Sadhana. But when I took a closer look, the lady looked different. She looked somewhat like Sadhana, somewhat like Saira Bano etc, but she was someone else. And then I got it. She was Fariyal ! Yes, the same lady who in the view of critics , wasted her opportunities and ended up as an item song wonder in subsequent movies. I used to read a lot in 1970s how Rekha was going the Faryal way.Of course, Rakha avaoided that destiny when she finally reinvented herself in 1978.
Here in this song, Faryal does what the director must have asked her to do, and what more can one do ? The movie too have to succeed for her career to look up, and how can a movie succeed when it has Shashi Kapoor as the sole hero ? 🙂
The song though is superb .It is written by Prem Dhawan and its music is composed by Chitragupta. Rafi has sung this song wonderfully well. It isunfortunate that a song of this quality was forgotten because the movie bombed at the box office.
No matter. Now that we have technology available, and there are people willing to share such gems on internet, I am sure we will be able to re discover such songs and savour them.
